The ocean comprises the largest object on our planet. Retelling human history from an oceanic rather than terrestrial point of view unsettles our relationship with the natural environment. Our engagement with the world's oceans can be destructive, as with today's deluge of plastic trash and acidification, but the mismatch between small bodies and vast seas also emphasizes the frailty and resilience of human experience.

Neem Karoli Baba known as Maharaj-ji—was a guru, mystic and devotee of Hanuman. He is very well known outside India for being the spiritual master of a number of prominent Americans who traveled to India in the 1960s and '70s, including spiritual teachers Ram Dass, Bhagavan Das, and musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. His ashrams are in Kainchi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Shimla, Neem Karoli village near Khimasepur in Farrukhabad, Bhumiadhar, Hanumangarhi, Delhi in India and in Taos, New Mexico. Maharaji was a lifelong adept of bhakti yoga, and encouraged service to others (seva).

Where can we find a wellspring of inspiration to raise us from our doldrums, rekindle our enthusiasm about everyday events, and encourage us to explore untested possibilities? Maybe we can find it in familiar places: within ideas and examples of people we know that illuminate higher values to aspire to; among simple interests and pleasures that we take for granted and never fully recognize; and connected to unresolved problems that cry out for innovative solutions.
