Pubblicato nel 1912, questo romanzo ebbe un grande successo, non solo perché raccontava lo “scandalo russo”, la storia dell’avventuriera Maria Tarnowska, condannata a 8 anni per aver spinto , con la complicità di un suo amante, un altro suo amante a uccidere il suo futuro marito; ma perché la storia di questa donna la vedeva al centro di grandi passioni e di suicidi (se ne contano almeno due). Maria Tarnowska ebbe una pena mite grazie all’impostazione della difesa che mostrò la sua storia di sposa bambina con un pervertito, e la sua infermità mentale, dovuta anche alla cocaina.
