Once a police detective in St. Paul, Minnesota, Rushmore McKenzie has become an unlikely millionaire and an occasional unlicensed private investigator, doing favors for friends. The favor, this time, is for a friend of a friend - Erin Peterson, a local business person and owner of a growing food company called Salsa Girl. Someone seems to have a beef with her: The outside locks on her factory having been systematically filled with superglue. But for some reason, Erin doesn’t want to report this harassment to the police.

When three small-time country gangsters break out of jail, they return to the only life they know - small-town bank robbing. When Bowie, the youngest of them, falls in love with Keechie, one of the older gangster's cousins, it becomes a classic tale of love with nowhere to hide and no hope of reprieve.

The story follows the exploits of three desperate escaped convicts. They rob banks and have a string of successes. They buy guns, nice clothes, and fast cars and read about themselves in the newspapers. Bowie, the central figure of the three thieves, had been serving time for a murder he committed when only 16. Bowie falls in love with Keechie, the cousin of one of his partners, and she joins him on the run.
