Wilson relates his tale of how Bart Dawson, a trusted member of his party, disappeared with four bags of hard-won gold during a gunfight. Frank and Joe are thrilled to receive a telegram from their father, requesting that they join him in Montana immediately to assist on the gold case. But to their surprise, Fenton Hardy is working for Bart Dawson, the same man whom Jadbury Wilson has accused of having stolen his gold.
