The night before the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket sees the great and the good of the horse-racing community gathered for a prestigious black-tie Gala dinner. It is a fitting testament to the glamour of the occasion that top chef Max Moreton is cooking the evening's meal. Founder of the racing town's favourite Michelin-starred restaurant, the Hay Net, Max is something of a celebrity in Newmarket circles.

While I was off pitching in the big leagues, my family was back in the small town of Sweetwater, Texas, running the family ranch. Then tragedy hit and I discovered there were secrets that my family kept, problems they hid. I went home, left behind the money, women, and fame. I took over the ranch, took care of my grandmother, and took over hiding the secrets. Then she came to town. A smart-mouthed, clumsy, too-smart-and-too-pretty good city girl hiding out to write a book, in the cottage my grandmother rented her without my permission, and she sees too much. She knows too much.

“On the heels of Under Orders, Francis once again proves himself a master. Wow.”—Booklist Max Moreton is a rising culinary star until his guests fall victim to severe food poisoning and then a bomb blast rips through the luncheon he’s catering. Two close calls are too close for comfort...

Havana Heat transports readers to 1911 America, where real-life pitcher Luther "Dummy" Taylor is trying to work his arm back into fighting shape. Though deaf, Taylor helped lead John McGraw's New York Giants to the pennant, winning 115 games between 1900 and 1908. But an injury relegates him to the minors, and he dreams of one last shot at the big barnstorming trip to Cuba.

Fighting against our relationship turns into keeping it a secret… most importantly from her father. At first, it's fun sneaking around, but then it feels like every time we're close to coming clean, something happens to stop us. Then, life takes another detour as the reminder that life is short plows into me. It's moments like these that make me think long and hard about the future. For the first time, the twelve years between us start to have some meaning as I wonder whether I'm robbing her of the future she deserves.

As it turns out, I can't stay away. Life keeps throwing us together, and it seems like she's everywhere all at once. She's in the same house as me, in the bedroom next to mine as I dream about what she's doing in there. She's interning at the baseball stadium when I'm there to focus on the game, and her boss has assigned her to shadow me as we work on a project together.
