Angela Harrelson grew up poor, one of 13 brothers and sisters raised in a shack in the North Carolina woods. She was first in her family to go to college, first to be commissioned in the military, and first to have a career as a professional nurse. Along the way, she and her family were exposed to the harshest forms of racism - from her childhood riding the school bus with White children who made the Black kids stand, to racist commanding officers in the Air Force who told her they wanted her to fail.

Cochise, a Chiricahua, was said to be the most resourceful, most brutal, most feared Apache. He and his warriors raided in both Mexico and the United States, crossing the border both ways to obtain sanctuary after raids for cattle, horses, and other livestock. Once, only he was captured and imprisoned; on the day he was freed he vowed never to be taken again. From that day, he gave no quarter and asked none.

This book is dedicated to all of you listening to my thoughts about my China experiences. I have met many people over my lifetime and each of them has given me some insight into what this world is all about and made me appreciate the title of the 1966 Clint Eastwood movie: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I am grateful for the patience and understanding of all my family, my wife Kim, my daughter Christine and her family, my son Brian and his family, and my four grandsons, Henry, Mason, Charlie, and Jordan.

By the turn of the 20th century, American entertainment was still preoccupied with European-style operetta, as embodied in the works of cellist-composer Victor Herbert. Traditional dance forms moved from European stories to the American prairie in Oklahoma by the late 1940s, and what was once the property of Bavarian princes became the singing standards of cowboys riding through the corn fields in "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" and "Out of My Dreams".

Before the advent of the digital age, the ability to write clearly and succinctly was mandatory for many walks of life, including commercial, diplomatic, academic, philosophical, and historical pursuits. George Orwell’s campaign for perfectly written English in an artistic and content-oriented sense might seem obsessive now, but the importance of written accuracy and well-conveyed meaning for that age cannot be overstated.

"There is no equal justice for Black people today; there never has been. To our everlasting shame, the quality of justice in America has always been and is now directly related to the color of one's skin as well as to the size of one's pocketbook." This quote comes from George W. Crockett Jr.'s essay, "A Black Judge Speaks" (Judicature, 1970). The stories of Black lawyers and judges are rarely told. By sharing Crockett's life of principled courage, "No Equal Justice" breaks this silence.

Astoria, Oregon, owes its existence as much to a little-known ship captain as its namesake, John Jacob Astor. Captain George Flavel happened upon the ramshackle village at the mouth of the Columbia River in the fall of 1849, bringing goods during the California Gold Rush. As he subsequently captained and piloted three different ships along the Pacific coast, he learned that the perilous Columbia River Bar, the "graveyard of the Pacific", barred the entrance to most mariners. Hazards abounded.

Growing up in a home of imbalance can be very trying for a young adult. Alicia was molested in her early years of life and during her teenage years. She wasn't allowed to 'grow' under those circumstances. And because of that, Alicia made many mistakes. One mistake after another. She made rushed decisions that weren't thought through like they needed to be. It caused her to live a life that spiraled out of control, she couldn't get a handle on it. It took God telling her at one point and time in her life when it was total darkness, "you have to go!"
