The prolific Scottish 19th century writer Andrew Lang translated Homer and wrote novels. But he is best remembered now for his collections of books for younger readers, especially his nine volumes of fairy tales named after a color, such as The Lilac Fairy Book and The Orange Fairy Book. The Story of King Frost comes from The Yellow Fairy Book, first published in 1894.

"King Kojata" is a Slavonic fairy tale. A king and a queen had no children. One day, the king was travelling and grew thirsty. He found a spring with a cup floating in it. He did not succeed at trying to grab the cup: it always evaded his hands. When he dropped to drink directly, a creature in the well grabbed his beard and would not free him until he promised to give it something he knew nothing about, and which he would find on his return home.

Once upon a time, the Queen of the Fairies decided to undertake a great quest: gather her flower-army and transform a frozen country into living green nature. But for this to be, they had to first make war on the Frost Giants. And so the help of the Sun was asked, and he was willing to give it, for it was time for the play of children and the arrival of Mankind. So the fairies gathered together, arrayed in their assigned forms, of flower, herb, grass and root, and marched forth!
