1914, Fiji: 25-year-old Akal Singh would rather be anywhere but this tropical paradise—or, as he calls it, “this godforsaken island.” After a promising start to his police career in his native India and Hong Kong, Akal has been sent to Fiji as punishment for a humiliating professional mistake. Lonely and grumpy, Akal plods through his work and dreams of getting back to Hong Kong. When an indentured Indian woman goes missing from a sugarcane plantation and Fiji’s newspapers scream “kidnapping,” the inspector-general reluctantly assigns Akal the case.

A letter, written in a secret cipher he recognizes all too well, reveals that an old foe of Holmes - a murderer he once captured after an incredible duel of wits - is back, has kidnapped his previous victim’s widow, and is now impersonating Holmes himself. Holmes must once again match wits with a particularly cunning adversary, one whose hatred of Holmes has seemingly become the killer’s single greatest obsession.

Maggie Collins, a newly minted NYPD detective, is lovely enough to be a model but wants a career chasing bad guys. She volunteers to go undercover to catch a serial killer. "Don't get in the car," her lieutenant says. But, of course, she gets into the car. The killer thinks he is in love, but his idea of love is a little strange.

When Troy and his family are forced to move, they take a spot on an old deserted farmhouse. The field out back is barren except The Tree that is in the middle of the field. Strange things start to happen and the family is forced to find out the macabre history of The Tree.
