In 1942, an impulsive promise to her brother before he goes off to the European front puts Avis Montgomery in the unlikely position of head librarian in small-town Maine. Berlino, dicembre 1939. Mentre la Germania entra in guerra, i nazisti stringono la loro morsa sulla popolazione. La paranoia nella capitale è intensificata da un rigido blackout che ogni notte, al tramonto del cupo sole invernale, fa sprofondare la città in un'oscurità opprimente. Quando una giovane donna viene trovata brutalmente assassinata, l'ispettore Horst Schenke riceve subito pressioni per risolvere il caso. Trattato con sospetto dai suoi stessi superiori per la mancata adesione al partito nazista, Schenke cammina su una lastra di ghiaccio molto sottile.

Londres 1942 : profitant du couvre-feu, un tueur hante les rues de la ville. En quelques jours, il assassine et mutile quatre femmes. Son modus operandi interpelle Scotland Yard et la presse, qui le surnomme aussitôt le Blackout Ripper. Les messages qu'il laisse sur les scènes de crime, conçus comme des indices codés, imposent bientôt aux enquêteurs une piste inquiétante : le criminel semble s'inspirer des leçons du mage noir Aleister Crowley et de son manuscrit démoniaque, "Le Livre de la Loi".
