Fear made me dig. After a while, I really did find something, but it didn't look like a doll to me. It looked more like an old rag sewed up to look like a doll, with two buttons as eyes and few strands of hair poking out of what was supposed to be her head. It was muddy and half-decayed, and I tried to tell her again that she doesn't need it, but I didn't.

When Lindsey Evans walks through the door of a crumbling Texas farmhouse, she feels something she can't explain, a bone-deep recognition, as if she's come home to a place she's never been. The house belonged to Anna-Rose Collins. In 1882, Anna-Rose arrived as a hopeful newlywed, only to find herself trapped in a marriage to a dangerous man. She survived. She endured. And when she finally found her freedom, she spent the next six decades quietly becoming the heart of her community. But James Collins didn't stay dead quietly.

A strange illness ravages the countryside while Dr. Anna Roberts struggles to recover from her own near-death experience. She's falling in love with Jedediah, a three-thousand-year-old ghost, but his guarded alliance with a council of ancient spirits frightens her. Can Jed's allegiance be trusted?

Racing against time to reunite her ghost’s soul with his body, Dr. Anna Roberts becomes further embroiled in a millennia-old feud. Confronted by powerful spirits, Anna is forced to intervene, using her paranormal powers against those who seek to destroy her. To the ever-gathering beings, the living are nothing, and so they will stop at nothing to complete their return.

Physician Anna Roberts runs a free health clinic in Kansas City where she spends her days taking care of the living and avoiding the spirits of the dead. A late-night accident leaves Anna at the mercy of the strange man who saved her life, but Anna soon learns that meeting Jed was no coincidence. As Anna is drawn into Jed's dangerous world and a feud 3000 years in the making, she must come to terms with her own secrets and decide what she will do when they come calling.
