R. E. Lee by Douglas Southall Freeman was the recipient of the 1935 Pulitzer Prize for Literature. It was a richly deserved honor, for Freeman's biography of the distinguished Virginian went on to become one of the most celebrated of all American biographies, a favorite of General George Marshall and President Dwight Eisenhower, among many others. Since his death, thousands of American soldiers have sought to emulate Lee's example of virtue, courage, and duty.

Author Paul D. Hufstedler has spent many years researching the parallel lives and military careers of three of his ancestors — an uncle, a great uncle and a great-grandfather. Tracing their harrowing stories in the American Civil War, the era prior to WWI, and the Second World War, we are given generous details about the challenges each faced both on and off the battlefield. Retelling their exploits helps the listener renew their respect for the sacrifices and vagaries of war and disease.

A thrilling history of the Queen City of the West during the Civil War.

Rebel Bulldog tells the story of Preston Davidson, a Northerner who fought for the Confederacy, and his family who lived in Indiana and Virginia. It is a story that examines antebellum religion, education, reform, and politics, and how they affected the identity of not just one young man, but of a nation caught up in a civil war. Furthermore, it discusses how a native-born Hoosier reached the decision to fight for the South, and the postwar life of a proud Rebel who tried to remake his life in a very different state and nation than the ones he had left in 1860.

Antietam: The Bloodiest Day outlines the battle and explains how it came about. In less than an hour, you will meet the main participants, understand Union and Confederate troop movements, and learn why Abraham Lincoln thought McClellan’s great victory was a lost opportunity. For those listeners who want to know more and understand how contemporary readers learned about the battle, we included the original accounts printed in the New York Herald and the New York Tribune.

In a modern era that Americans often view wearily as being too partisan, elections often bring the same questions. Many look back nostalgically to earlier centuries in which it's assumed America had great statesmen, which is understandable in light of increasingly hostile political rhetoric that seems to be more aimed at dividing the country than uniting it. Of course, more serious historians analyze whether these elusive statesmen actually ever existed, and whether there was truly a time when politicians didn't engage in political rancor.
