When Detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at Montreal's St. Hubert airfield, he does so without looking back. For Sime, the 850-mile journey ahead represents an opportunity to escape the bitter blend of loneliness and regret that has come to characterise his life in the city. Travelling as part of an eight-officer investigation team, Sime's destination lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Only two kilometres wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of around 130 inhabitants - the wealthiest of which has just been discovered murdered in his home.

Fin Macleod har lagt sit arbejde i drabsafdelingen i Edinburgh bag sig og er faldet til på sin fødeø, The Isle of Lewis, hvor han arbejder som sikkerhedschef for en af øens store jordbesiddere. Jobbet bringer ham dog snart på kollisionskurs med sin gamle barndomsven Whistler Macaskill, områdets mest indædte krybskytte. Da Fin opsøger Whistler, bliver de to mænd vidner til et sælsomt naturfænomen. En dyb sø står pludseligt og uforklarligt drænet for vand, og op af mudderet stikker de næsten uskadte rester af et lille enmotors fly, som forsvandt sporløst for sytten år siden.

Da et yderst velbevaret lig dukker op i en tørvemose på Isle of Lewis, er øboerne overbevist om, at man har gjort et epokegørende oldtidsfund af samme betydning som Tollundmanden. Den døde bliver da også hurtigt omtalt som 'Lewismanden'. Men da retsmedicinerne finder en falmet Elvis-tatovering på Lewismandens overarm, og da en dna-analyse desuden viser, at han er i nær familie med en af øens kendte skikkelser, indleder det lokale politi en mordefterforskning.
