The CBT Career Guide (with Dr Helen Moya)

Dr Helen Moya is back in the therapy room, this time to talk about her new book, The CBT Career Guide. Helen was previously course director on the Nottingham CBT PG Dip, and long-time listeners will remember her from our earlier episode on comorbid ADHD (linked below). This time she's turned her attention to something training courses rarely touch: what an actual career in CBT looks like, before, during and long after qualifying.

    • The ARD model — why Helen built her book around the Attract, Retain and Develop model rather than the usual "before/during/after training" framing, and why she wants career pathways taught in schools and colleges, not just on placement.
    • Professional identity and the "patchwork" route in — the difference between coming into CBT via a core profession versus the KSA route, and why so many trainees feel unmoored without a clear professional identity.
    • Retention, burnout and the "sausage factory" — the systemic pressures that keep clinicians stuck, and why career development so rarely gets talked about.
    • Diversity, lived experience and building a CBT therapist — unconscious bias, imposter syndrome, and why Helen made diversity a thread through the whole book rather than a single chapter.

    ABOUT HELEN

Dr Helen Moya is the author of The CBT Career Guide, former course director of the Nottingham CBT PG Dip, and a CBT therapist with a background in learning disability nursing. She offers one-to-one career consultations alongside her writing, training, and clinical work.

The CBT Career Guide is available from Amazon and other book retailers (~£21).

Also mentioned: our earlier episode with Helen on comorbid ADHD — well worth going back to if you haven't already.
