  • 10. Disrupting habits and reframing practice
    Jan 29 2026

What if the way you’ve always practiced is holding you back? In this episode of The Opera Training Companion, host Rachel Nicholls, alongside Soprano Olivia Rose Tringham (2024/25 alum), explore how disrupting habits and reframing practice can unlock deeper learning and artistic growth. Joined by guest Nicki Kennedy, they dive into the neuroscience behind motor skills and habit formation, uncover strategies for breaking perfection loops, and discuss how “playful practice” can boost motivation and retention. With insights for performers, teachers, and students, this conversation offers practical tools to help artists rethink how - and why - they practice.

With over 20 years as an international classical soloist, recording artist, and vocal coach, Nicki has performed worldwide in operas and concerts and has recorded for many major Hollywood films. Alongside her performing career, she has consistently taught and coached, developing a profound understanding of voice science, function, and anatomy. She is a qualified Vocal Rehabilitation Specialist and a counselling-informed practitioner with expertise in manual therapy.
