  • Trump's China Trip
    May 17 2026

This week on The Necessary Conversation, Bob is still out dealing with some medical issues so Mary Lou, Chad and Haley hold down the fort and discuss:

🇨🇳 Trump took a two-day trip to China that was widely seen as a humiliation for America. President Xi called the U.S. a "declining nation," sat Trump in a smaller chair, and made zero commitments on Iran. Trump brought a squad of billionaires — including Elon Musk and Tim Cook on Air Force One — plus Eric and Lara Trump, but not Melania. He did bring his 34-year-old executive assistant Natalie Harp, fueling speculation. He left with nothing.

🤷 Trump said the quiet part out loud — twice. When asked if Americans' financial situations were motivating him to make a deal with Iran, he said: "Not even a little bit. I don't think about Americans' financial situation. I don't think about anybody." Gas hit $4.50/gallon the same day. When Fox's Bret Baier gave him a chance to walk it back, he doubled down: "Short-term pain. I'd make it again."

🏙️ NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani hit his 100-day mark and the results are in: he eliminated New York's $12 billion deficit, launched universal childcare, secured $30 million from bad landlords, and repaired over 6,000 apartments. Mom said New York would fall under Mamdani. We check in on that prediction.

🗣️ We simmer down with a round of speaking gibberish.

💰 Trump is expected to drop his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS in exchange for creating a $1.7 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund to compensate allies — including nearly 1,600 January 6 defendants he already pardoned. The money comes from the Treasury's Judgment Fund, Trump has unchecked authority over who gets it, and there's zero oversight.

⚓ FBI Director Kash Patel got into a screaming match with a senator over his drinking — then we learned he took a "VIP snorkel" over the sunken USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, where more than 900 sailors and Marines are still entombed. A marine veteran called it "like having a bachelor party at a church."

🎬 Trump's Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy is starring in a new reality show called "The Great American Roadtrip" — funded by Boeing, Shell, Toyota, United Airlines, and Royal Caribbean, all companies his department directly regulates. Taxpayers are covering his travel. Shell's profits doubled from the gas price surge. And Duffy filmed over seven months, meaning he wasn't doing his actual job. We ask: is this what a cabinet is supposed to look like?

Dad's back, the whole family is fired up, and this one goes everywhere.

  • Happy Mother's Day! 2026
    May 10 2026

This week on The Necessary Conversation, we celebrate Mother’s Day with a an update on Bob.

And we cover the biggest political issues of the week, which have Mary Lou getting even closer to leaving the Maga cult.

🗳️ Democracy is crumbling in real time. In the wake of the Supreme Court's gutting of voting rights protections, Tennessee carved up a majority-Black district in Memphis, Alabama passed a law to ignore its own primary results, Louisiana's governor suspended primaries after votes had already been cast, and South Carolina is looking at eliminating its only Democratic district. Seven of the 13 House members targeted by these Republican-drawn maps are Black or Latino. Democrats are countering with their own maps — but Virginia's Supreme Court just struck theirs down. We ask: is any of this fair? Is any of it not racist?

🐂 Trump unveiled a 22-foot gold-leafed statue of himself called "Don Colossus" at his golf course in Miami. Evangelical and Jewish clergy consecrated it with prayers at the base. Christian commentators are calling it a modern-day golden calf straight out of the Book of Exodus. A Catholic newsletter wrote that "a faith that cannot say no to a golden calf is not Catholic." We ask Mom — as a Catholic — does this bother her?

💣 Week 10 of Trump's war with Iran and the ceasefire is officially dead. Trump launched "Operation Project Freedom" to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran responded with cruise missiles and drones, the U.S. destroyed six Iranian boats and disabled two oil tankers, and at least one sailor was killed. Trump called it "just a love tap" and insists the ceasefire is still in effect. Iran's foreign minister says otherwise.

🎉 We simmer down for a breather.

🎤 Trump threw a tantrum at ABC's Rachel Scott for asking why he's focused on construction projects while the country is at war and gas prices are soaring. He called her question "a disgrace to our country" and a forensic lip reader confirmed he called her "a bitch" on camera. This adds to a pattern that includes calling female reporters "piggy," "ugly, both inside and out," and "stupid and nasty."

🏗️ Remember when Trump said taxpayers wouldn't pay "a dime" for the White House ballroom? This week Senate Republicans tucked $1 billion in funding for it into an ICE and Border Patrol bill. Trump has said "I'm paying for it," "100% by me and some friends," "no charge to the taxpayer whatsoever," and "zero taxpayer dollars." Now we're paying for it. Sound familiar? Something about Mexico and a wall comes to mind.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

I struggle to understand the MAGA mind, and thought this would help. It doesn't. However it is fascinating to listen to the liberal (I am European - liberal is NOT a slur) children discuss current topics with their MAGA indoctrinated parents. It doesn't get me any closer to how do we change their minds, but it gets me out of my ivory tower of thinking that all educated people must agree with me.

Scary, Thought provoking, fascinating, funny
