  • The Interview | The top Jersey trial lawyer with a second life in theatre
    Jul 8 2026

What do courtrooms and theatres have in common? According to Advocate Simon Thomas – quite a lot.

A partner at Baker & Partners, Simon has spent more than 30 years working on some of Jersey's highest profile legal cases, including the L'Ecume II collision trial last year.

Away from the courtroom, however, he swaps legal submissions for stage directions as director of Come From Away, the internationally acclaimed musical based on the extraordinary true story of thousands of airline passengers stranded in the tiny Canadian town of Gander after the 9/11 attacks.

He dropped into the Bailiwick Podcasts studio to speak to Bailiwick Express Editor Fiona Potigny about doing justice to real-life stories, whether musicals deserve more credit than they’re often given, and whether there’s any truth in the old cliché that "all barristers are failed actors"…

Come From Away runs at the Opera House (which is gloriously air-conditioned) until 11 July – don't miss out, get your tickets here.

With the oft-held childhood fantasies of becoming a Premier League footballer or a principal ballerina now cast aside, it is likely that many Island students found that they were being pointed towards the finance industry.

While the finance sector still employs around 25% of Islanders, there several other opportunities for people whose skills might lie in areas such as problem-solving and critical thinking.
