A crew of 47 aboard an Alaskan fishing boat ominously nicknamed “The Danger Ranger” had been counting on a final run deep into the Bering Sea as a last-ditch effort to save a mediocre fishing season. Before ever arriving, they had to abandon ship in 32-degreewater amidst 20-foot swells and driving snow. Their last hope? A cook making the key calls, a helicopter running out of fuel, and a rookie rescue swimmer who had never saved anyone in open water. On one level, this is the true-life story of the Alaska Ranger sinking and of the rescue that followed - the most daring in the history of the Bering. Below the surface, however, lies a story that is about guilt and bravery, pain and pride, and both the worst but most importantly the best of who we are.©2021 Campside Media (P)2021 Audible Originals, LLC Americas Social Sciences United States

Simply one of the best podcasts I've heard. Beautifully produced and presented. A truly absorbing account of real life heroism and bravery. I hope the team take more slices of the real world and present them in this way.

Its part documentary on Alaskan fishing and coastguard service, part social commentary, part emotional tale of professionalism band survival and part telling the personal stories of those involved.

Can't believe I'm only the 3rd to review this. It feels like I've just seen the Beatles in Hamburg befire they got famous and will be claiming bragging rights on being one of the first to hear this masterpiece.

Please can we have more like this.

A masterpiece of story telling

A really well-told podcast about a terrifying and heart-moving event. I really liked how the podcast discussed the emotional toll experienced by the survivors and rescuers in the years after. As the podcast mentions, these amazing stories of heroism, bravery, tragedy and endurance can end when the rescue operation ends but there is more to be told. So while the bulk of this well-produced podcast is about the rescue, I very much appreciated this extra dimension to the story. More of this please Audible!

So good I listened to the whole thing in one go. While it provides Intriguing insight into the fishing industry, this podcasts real appeal is the terrifying true story that sounds like a Hollywood film, not something that happened recently.

A gripping podcast

The story unfolds and becomes more intense as the race against the elements and time threaten to scupper the rescue attempts. A story of true bravery and courage.

This well delivered factual account of absolute Terror and Selfless Bravery is an absolute must listen. It is truly humbling and will take you into the nightmare of the Tragedy. Short of being Cold Wet Frightened Lost in Dark Mountainous Seas you will taste the Terror.
