  • Summary

  • A crew of 47 aboard an Alaskan fishing boat ominously nicknamed “The Danger Ranger” had been counting on a final run deep into the Bering Sea as a last-ditch effort to save a mediocre fishing season. Before ever arriving, they had to abandon ship in 32-degreewater amidst 20-foot swells and driving snow. Their last hope? A cook making the key calls, a helicopter running out of fuel, and a rookie rescue swimmer who had never saved anyone in open water. On one level, this is the true-life story of the Alaska Ranger sinking and of the rescue that followed - the most daring in the history of the Bering. Below the surface, however, lies a story that is about guilt and bravery, pain and pride, and both the worst but most importantly the best of who we are.

Excellent podcast, really gripping and well presented. As others have said, this is a harrowing story but is told well and without sensationalism.

A gripping podcast

So good I listened to the whole thing in one go. While it provides Intriguing insight into the fishing industry, this podcasts real appeal is the terrifying true story that sounds like a Hollywood film, not something that happened recently.

Terrifying

The first episode I felt a bit meh and my mind was wandering. After that though I was hooked. What a horrific, terrifying ordeal for all involved. The story was well told by the people who were there - a fairly sparse story telling style with no narrator as such. Absorbing

Brilliant.

Absolutely enthralling. The storytelling, production and narration are all first class. I cried a number of times, but it was also strangely warmly told - I don't know a better way to describe it. Truly excellent.

A very poignant story about some very brave men and some of the poor conditions in which they have to work.
