  • The Leprechaun: The Stranger Folklore Behind the Little Green Figure
    Oct 5 2026

Behind a sunny hedge on a harvest holiday, Tom Fitzpatrick hears a small clacking sound. At first he thinks it is a bird among the leaves. Then he finds a very small old shoemaker at work beside a pitcher, a wooden stool, and a tiny brogue waiting for its heel. This gentle Irish folklore episode follows Tom through Joseph Jacobs’s 1892 printed adaptation, “The Field of Boliauns.” Hoping for hidden gold, Tom keeps his attention fixed on the little worker, follows him across hedges, ditches, and boggy ground, and marks a promised place with a red garter. Yet a field can hold more than one plant, and a promise can be kept in ways that are not quite as useful as they first appear. Two companion tellings follow. Near Kilmallock, Molly Cogan recalls a family account of her grandfather, a tired mare, and a small shoe left behind after a cluricaune escapes. Then William Allingham’s authored poem brings another fairy shoemaker to a rath and a castle ditch, where a snuff-box changes everything. Calm, curious, and source-aware, this episode considers the small things these stories leave behind: a repaired heel, an untasted drink, a lost shoe, a remembered sound, and the question of what lasts when promised treasure cannot be found.

  • The Thunderbird: The Giant Bird of North American Legend
    Sep 28 2026

A Quinault story recorded on the Washington coast follows Sisemo, the husband of Thunder’s daughter, as Thunder tests whether he is worthy of a place in the family. Sisemo is sent for snow from five mountain tops, then for mountain lions and bears. He enters a cedar log that Thunder expects will hold him. Finally, he travels to the world below, where a guarded ball of light is rolled between its keepers. This episode follows Livingston Farrand’s fuller English publication from 1902, while carefully distinguishing it from his shorter English field note made in 1897. It is one historical record of one Quinault telling, preserved through collecting, publication, and later retelling. It is not a single story shared by all Indigenous peoples of North America. Move slowly through a story of difficult family judgment, underestimated ability, snow gathered into one hand, a cedar log carried home, and light brought upward beneath the wings of Thunder.

  • The Chupacabra: The Strange Beast of Caribbean Folklore
    Sep 20 2026

In 1995, reports of dead sheep, goats, chickens, and other domestic animals began troubling communities across Puerto Rico. Some animals were said to bear puncture wounds. Some owners believed there was little blood visible. Soon, the reports gathered around a memorable new name: el chupacabras, the goat-sucker. This episode follows the modern Caribbean legend from the hills of Orocovis to the municipality of Canóvanas, where Mayor José Ramón Soto Rivera joined public searches for the unknown attacker. It also follows Madelyne Tolentino, whose description of an upright creature with large eyes and spines along its back gave the legend its best-known Puerto Rican form. As television and newspapers carried the story beyond the island, the creature changed. In Mexico, Texas, and the American Southwest, the chupacabra was often described not as a spiny biped, but as a hairless animal resembling a dog or coyote. Some later carcasses were tested and identified as known canids, often affected by mange. Yet those findings do not identify every predator involved in Puerto Rico’s early livestock losses. Told with care for the people, animals, and places at the center of the story, this is a quiet account of how real losses, uncertain evidence, public fear, memory, media, and imagination gave Puerto Rico one of the world’s most enduring modern legends.
