At a MED-GEM Network webinar, GIZ’s H2Uppp team offered a useful reality check on the green hydrogen market. The sector is moving, but it remains early-stage, fragmented and heavily dependent on project preparation, risk reduction and public-private cooperation. The core message was straightforward: hydrogen markets will not scale through ambition alone, but through bankable projects, practical tools and better coordination.
Presented by Claudio Cinquemani, Philip Miltrup and Veit Raisch, H2Uppp was framed as a hands-on programme focused on the most fragile part of the value chain: the stage before major investment, when projects still need to prove their technical, economic and institutional viability. Its approach combines project identification, project development and support to implementation and trade, with the aim of turning early ideas into more credible pipelines.

Building on the MED-GEM Helpdesk monthly Q&A cycles, this quarterly info session will provide targeted insights into two key dimensions shaping renewable hydrogen market access to the EU: RFNBO certification and the role of Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) in the context of CBAM.

The session will present concrete lessons learned from recent workshops and case studies in non-EU countries, highlighting practical challenges, common misconceptions, and the enabling conditions required to achieve certification readiness.

It will also unpack how renewable electricity tracking instruments such as GoOs interact with RFNBO requirements and CBAM rules, clarifying their role, limitations, and complementarity with other mechanisms such as Power Purchase Agreements.

The fifth MED-GEM Pitstop meeting examined the implications of the current global energy crisis for the Mediterranean region and highlighted the need for a more integrated approach to energy security and transition. Held under the title From Crisis to Transition: Rethinking Energy in the Mediterranean, the meeting was based on a white paper prepared by the MED-GEM Network to assess the effects of the current geopolitical shock on energy and commodity systems across the wider region.

Aviation is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and is facing increasing regulatory, financial and societal pressure to decarbonise. In this context, SAF are recognised as one of the most promising near-and medium-term solutions to reduce lifecycle emissions while preserving connectivity and economic value.

However, the SAF landscape remains complex. Multiple feedstocks and production pathways coexist, EU regulatory frameworks are evolving rapidly, and stakeholders face major challenges related to investment, certification and operational implementation.

This info session aims to:

• provide an overview of the current state of the EU SAF market, including key market dynamics and recent initiatives,
• clarify core EU regulatory and certification questions, with a particular focus on:

Dans le cadre du Partenariat Vert Maroc-UE et du projet MED-GEM, financé par l’Union européenne et en partenariat avec le Cluster Green H2, HINICIO et CertifHy un atelier de formation des formateurs (Training of Trainers) s’est tenu les 23 et 24 avril 2025 à l’Université Internationale de Rabat. L’objectif : renforcer les capacités locales en matière de certification des carburants renouvelables d’origine non biologique (RFNBOs), conformément à la directive européenne sur les énergies renouvelables (RED II).
