“I’ve been studying Levantine Arabic for years, and Khaled’s podcast is definitely my favourite. He speaks clearly and slowly so I catch the new vocabulary much more easily than with other podcasts.”

  • #368-Gate of the Sun (باب الشمس) – A Palestinian Story Told Through Memory
    Dec 25 2025

What if history weren’t written in dates but whispered in memories?

We explore Gate of the Sun (باب الشمس) by Elias Khoury, one of the most powerful Palestinian novels ever written. Rather than following a traditional historical timeline, this story unfolds through the lens of memory, love, exile, and storytelling.

Set in a refugee camp near Beirut, the novel follows Yūnis, an ageing Palestinian fighter lying in a coma, and Dr Khalīl, who sits beside him and tells stories in the hope of bringing him back to life. Through these stories, we hear the voices of villagers, fighters, women waiting, men returning, and people surviving after the Nakba of 1948.

This episode is also designed for Arabic learners. You will hear English narration paired with Levantine Arabic, allowing you to feel the language emotionally, not just understand it intellectually. This is storytelling as language learning — slow, human, and meaningful.

In this episode, Khaled Nassra introduces Gate of the Sun (باب الشمس) by Elias Khoury — a novel that tells the Palestinian story through memory rather than official history.

    You’ll hear:

    • A cinematic introduction to the novel’s characters

    • Why memory and fragmentation are central to Palestinian storytelling

    • How Levantine Arabic carries emotion differently from translated text

    • Why this novel is essential reading for anyone interested in Palestine, Arabic literature, or storytelling

    This episode is ideal for:

    • Arabic learners (C1 Level)

    • Students of Levantine Arabic

    • Readers of Arabic literature in translation

    • Anyone interested in Palestinian history and memory

🎙️ Language focus: English + Levantine Arabic
    🎧 Style: Story-driven, reflective, emotional
