  • Summary

  • Journey back to the height of the Cold War in this non-fiction Audible Original. It’s 1984. US intelligence officers battling the Soviets know that KGB spies could be anywhere. Anywhere except the FBI. Because the Bureau has never been compromised -- until now. In this noir, spy thriller, we follow the life and mystery of Richard W. Miller, the first FBI agent arrested for espionage against his own country.

When Miller is spotted with a suspected Soviet spy and former FBI Informant, it sets off a chain of events that will threaten national security, shake public faith in the institutions meant to protect Americans, destroy a family, and derail careers. Featuring the voices of Congressman Adam Schiff, Richard W. Miller’s family, former US Attorney Robert Bonner, and veteran reporter Linda Deutsch - and based off of extensive research, including Miller’s own prison diaries and trial transcripts spanning 7 years. Expect intrigue, suspense, and a modern exploration of a remarkable past event.

A good lesson in life.

Totally absorbing and at first I wondered whether or not it was going to be too long. However, every detail was covered and all the threads and characters are brought together better than in many novels I have read. Processes in the law are well explained without being condescending. The narration is excellent and some fabulous voices feature!
As for the story... the predicament of the protagonist seems to be mostly brought upon himself as he repeatedly fails to understand the impression he makes on those around him, and consequently learns nothing and does not modify his own behaviour. He makes the same mistakes over and over. The price he pays in the end, though, would seem to many to be overly harsh. But it's too late. We only get one chance at life - be careful not to mess it up!

stick with it. it gets better.

you know how an american prime time documentary will spend 5 minutes going over the story thats already been explained then 2 minutes progressing the narrative. and then another 5 pandering to the lowest form of the english language just to make sure we get it. yes its like that. good narration though.

Fascinating and compelling.

This was really well presented and a thoroughly compelling listen. I was so intrigued that I found myself conducting further research into the R.W. Miller case. I would definitely recommend this series.

Fascinating story, slow start

Absolutely worthwhile your time, though for the first two episodes I was not best pleased with the repetitve pace and twisting structure of the storytelling. Very glad I stuck with it (finishing at 4am!!): a part of history worth knowing and reflecting upon.

Heavy Going

I love spy stories such as Aldrich Ames & Robert Hansen, but to be perfectly honest,I felt this particular story extremely heavy going, took me a good few days to finish it,not sure I'd listen to it again....
