In 1988, Aloha Airlines Flight 243 suffered a terrifying explosive decompression when a massive section of the aircraft’s fuselage suddenly tore away during a routine flight between the Hawaiian Islands.
With the cabin exposed to the open air and the aircraft severely damaged, the experienced crew faced an almost impossible emergency. Despite the catastrophic structural failure, they managed to maintain control and make an emergency landing on Maui, saving nearly everyone on board.
The investigation revealed that years of intense operation, metal fatigue, and corrosion had weakened the aging aircraft’s structure. The disaster exposed serious challenges in inspecting and maintaining older aircraft and prompted major changes in aviation safety standards.
