Summary
Crime Off the Grid is a podcast with true crime stories from our National Parks, National Forests, and other wild places.

The hosts, Tara and Nancy, bring over 30 years of experience each working as law enforcement rangers in National Parks and National Forests (in Nancy's case). Our guests are rangers, investigators, prosecutors, victim specialists, and other first responders who have dedicated their careers to justice and safety in places off the grid.

Join the hosts as they discuss cases, listen to Ranger Tales; real rangers telling real stories that you just can't make up, and...report news and commentary from wild places from the Crime Off the Grid Newsroom!

Oswald West State Park; Park Rangers Attacked on the Oregon Coast
    Nov 2 2026
At Oregon’s beautiful Oswald West State Park, a routine morning of maintenance work turned into a horrifying act of violence. On April 28, 1999, two unarmed Oregon State Park Rangers were abducted at gunpoint and led deep into the forest. The gunman had a violent criminal history that included a kidnapping and ransom plot that once landed him on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. In this episode, we also remember the two men behind the badges and discuss the lasting changes to ranger safety policies, the challenges of working in remote public lands, and the extraordinary resilience of a survivor who refused to give up.
