CHRISTOPHER LIAM ROSE TALKS ABOUT #CLRM - MINDFULNESS (CLRMM)
Mindfulness in Buddhism is the practice of maintaining a clear, non-judgmental awareness of the present moment as part of a path to end suffering.
In Buddhism, mindfulness is known as sati, which translates to "memory" or "retention". It means keeping something in mind and remembering to stay present with a clear, wholesome mindset.
Unlike modern secular mindfulness—which often emphasizes purely non-judgmental, passive observation—Buddhist mindfulness is an active, purposeful practice. It acts as a guard or gatekeeper for the mind, helping practitioners distinguish between wholesome and unwholesome thoughts so they can let go of suffering and cultivate wisdom
Core Role in the Path
Noble Eightfold Path: Right Mindfulness (sammā-sati) is the seventh step on the path to awakening and ending suffering (dukkha).
Factors of Enlightenment: It serves as the very first of the Seven Factors of Enlightenment.
Ethical Living: It is deeply tied to morality (sīla) and concentration (samatha), guiding everyday ethical actions and intentions.
The Four Foundations of Mindfulness
In the foundational Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha taught that mindfulness is practiced by observing four frames of reference
The Body: Being aware of posture, breathing, and physical actions.
Feelings (Vedanā): Observing whether sensations are pleasant, painful, or neutral.
The Mind (Citta): Noticing the general state of the mind (e.g., whether it is angry, calm, distracted, or focused).
Mental Objects (Dhammas): Watching how thoughts and mental phenomena arise and pass away in relation to Buddhist truths like impermanence
