  • Justified by Grace, Sustained by Faith and Works: The Catholic Understanding of Salvation
    Aug 12 2026
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." — Ephesians 2:10 The question of how a person is justified before God is one of the most profound in all of Christian theology. The Catholic Church, rooted in Scripture and the unbroken tradition of the Apostles, teaches that justification is a gift of God's grace — but one that involves the whole person: mind, will, and action. This is not a contradiction. It is the fullness of the Gospel. Grace Comes First — Always Let's be clear from the outset: Catholics do not believe we earn salvation on our own. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states plainly that justification is "the most excellent work of God's love" (CCC 1994) and that it comes entirely from God's initiative. Paul confirms this in Ephesians 2:8–9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast." Grace is the foundation. Nothing happens without it. But Paul does not stop there — and neither does the Catholic Church. Faith That Works: The Biblical Model James 2:24 is unambiguous: "You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone." This is the only place in all of Scripture where the phrase "faith alone" appears — and it is used to deny that faith alone justifies. James continues: "For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead." (James 2:26) Paul himself echoes this in Galatians 5:6: "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Saving faith, in the biblical model, is not a one-time intellectual assent. It is a living, active trust in God that naturally produces love, obedience, and cooperation with His grace. Cooperation with Grace: The Human Response God does not save us against our will. Throughout Scripture, human beings are called to respond, cooperate, and persevere in the grace they have received.
    • Philippians 2:12–13: "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."
    • Romans 2:6–7: "God will repay each person according to what they have done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life."
    • Matthew 25:31–46: The parable of the sheep and goats makes eternal life contingent on feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and visiting the imprisoned.
    • Hebrews 12:14: "Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord."
The Role of the Sacraments The Catholic Church teaches that the sacraments are not mere symbols — they are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ, through which God actually imparts the life He promises. Baptism — The Door of Justification "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." — Acts 2:38 "No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit." — John 3:5 The Eucharist — Sustaining Salvation "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day." — John 6:54 Confession — Restoring What Is Lost "If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." — John 20:23 Can Salvation Be Lost? Scripture Says Yes
    • Hebrews 6:4–6: Those once enlightened can fall away.
    • 1 Corinthians 9:27: Paul feared being "disqualified" himself.
    • Romans 11:22: "Otherwise, you also will be cut off."
    • Revelation 3:5: Conditional language implies names can be blotted from the book of life.
The Full Picture: A Covenant Relationship The Catholic vision of salvation is best understood as a covenant — not a contract. God gives Himself fully in Christ. We respond by giving ourselves fully in return — through faith, love, obedience, and the sacramental life of the Church. "If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love." — John 15:10 Salvation is not a transaction completed in a moment. It is a lifelong journey of grace, response, and transformation — begun in Baptism, nourished in the Eucharist, restored in Confession, and completed in the mercy of God at the hour of death. "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." — Philippians 1:6 Interested in exploring more about Catholic faith and Scripture?
