 「トカトントン」は、26歳の復員青年から、創作、仕事、恋愛、デモ、スポーツなど何かやる気が起きると必ず耳に“トカトントン”の音が幻聴で聞こえてきてやる気が失せるという悩みの相談の手紙を受け取った某作家の返信の書簡。終戦直後という時代背景が反映されているとされる。
「ロマネスク」は、太宰の処女作品集『晩年』（昭和11年刊）に収められた一篇であるが、昔話風に3人の人物を登場させ、それぞれ仙術、喧嘩、嘘を極めることで人生を切り開こうと懸命に努力したものの、それによってかえって挫折を招いたという寓話的作品。
「饗応夫人」は、戦後の混乱を背景に、復員しない夫を待つ夫人が、「いやと言えない」性格に付け込まれて、夫の知人の医者連中に宿屋、料理屋同然に自宅に入り浸られ、接待に狂奔する悲哀を描く。
「陰火」は、やはり『晩年』に収められた一篇で、４つの掌篇から成る。25歳で父の工場を継いだ青年の話、結婚して３年間も妻が処女でなかったという事実を知らなかった男の話、憎くてたまらぬ異性でなければ関心を持てない男女の話、夜半に寝室近くに立った尼僧をめぐる不思議な話。
