 『清貧の思想』は、1992年に初版が発行され、ベストセラーとなったが、それは当時の世相を反映したものであった。当時、日本の工業製品が世界を席捲し、多くの日本人が海外渡航をしていた中で、日本及び日本人のあり方に疑問が、中野に対しても呈されたことが契機となったという。そのような物質万能の風潮は一側面に過ぎず、それとは対極の「清貧を尊ぶ思想」こそが、日本文化の精髄なのだということを講演等で話してきたが、それだけでは意が尽くせぬとして、他の仕事を全部放擲して書き続けたという。
　西行、兼好、光悦、芭蕉、池大雅、良寛など、「日本には物作りとか金儲けとか、現世の富貴や栄達を追求する者ばかりでなく、それ以外にひたすら心の世界を重んじる文化の伝統がある。ワーズワースの『低く暮し、高く思う』という詩句のように、現世での生存は能うかぎり簡素にして心を風雅の世界に遊ばせることを、人間としての最も高尚な生き方とする伝統があったのだ。」とする。このような訴えは、現在でも多くの人々の心に響くであろう。第3巻は完結編で、十六から廿四までを収録。©2024 響林社 Genre Fiction Literary Fiction
