This was a very interesting and insightful book. this book portrayed that most women were not seen as individuals but as property. Females who fell on hard times or at a certain age without male companionship/husband were deemed a prostitute. The law never saw someone on hard times, they were forgotten or punished for something that wasn't their fault. Within the pages of this book London was no place for any middle-age single woman to wander at nights. The law seemed to ignore or punish those who needed to be protected. they were forced to face their demies on their own. Quite a few fell to the knife or a blunt instrument and they were all seen as dredges of society. The jack the ripper theory felt like a way to simply put all those murders under one umbrella to make sense of them, with advances in technology more information could have been garnered to get a better idea of who murdered all these women. it's sad and it comes across as a travesty carried against women. it is still a puzzle unfolding but a rather eye opening read nonetheless.
