'An utterly essential purchase 9/10' Classic Rock

'Hilarious, touching and essential 4/5' Classic Pop

'Fascinating, funny, colourful and completely riveting. Highly recommended' Gary Crowley

'Dry, laconic and hilarious. Much like you’d imagine the man himself.' John Niven

'Winningly wry, his sardonic eye enlivens his rollicking memoir' The Guardian

'A searingly honest, unstintingly revealing and brutally funny memoir from one of punk's true originals.' Dylan Jones

In the mid 1970's, Marco Pirroni was a shy Kings Road punk kid. He played guitar with a nascent Siouxsie and the Banshees at their debut 100 Club gig in 1976. Future Sex Pistol Sid Vicious could often be found round at Marco's parents with a bag of laundry and a cup of tea. But as the early promise of punk rock's cultural liberation quickly soured, Marco's dreams of proper pop stardom only grew.

In a few short years, alongside an ambitious fellow punk survivor called Adam who was also looking to break out of the musical ghetto and onto Top of the Pops, Marco became the musical architect of the global Antmusic phenomenon. By the time he was 21, Marco was the co-writer of the two classic number one singles - ‘Prince Charming’ and the Ivor Novello-winning ‘Stand and Deliver’ - alongside the million selling, idiosyncratic new pop masterpiece 'Kings of the Wild Frontier' and its follow up album 'Prince Charming'.

Your Money or Your Life is Marco’s long-overdue and much-anticipated account of his time amidst the maelstrom of Antmania. It chronicles the breakneck period in Pirroni’s life which ends in March 1982, when Adam and the Ants split up amongst heartbreak and acrimony. Revelatory, caustically hilarious and with a cast of the biggest names in entertainment including Liberace, Liza Minelli and David Bowie, Your Money or Your Life is one of the unforgettable music stories of the 1970s and 1980s.

I think this book is a very valuable document of the time, from someone who genuinely was there and was in the midst of it all. Marco Pirroni tells us what happened and in some cases why but there’s not a great deal of insight involved. Quite a lot of the places he visited and things he did were boring but nevertheless he does see fit to mention them. And the other main characters in the book, especially Adam Ant, do seem a bit two dimensional.

I really don’t think Marco Pirroni reads his book very well and he certainly slurs some of the words. But there’s an authenticity here. I suppose he probably sounds just like this if you’re chatting to him down the pub.

Undoubtedly authentic.

Love, love, loved this book and Marco Pirroni narrating is just so truthful. Hope that the next chapter of this exceptional musician will follow in the next few years. Bravo!

The most authentic voice.

Enjoyed listening to the birth of the new Adam and the Ants and how the songs came together. Interesting how the band was fracturing behind the scenes.

This from-the-horse's-mouth book goes up to Pirroni being 23, just after Adam and the Ants split up. It's interesting and an easy read. It's not quite such an easy listen: I couldn't make out some of the words and his delivery is often faltering. But I didn't mind at all because it sounded exactly like the author reading aloud, which he is presumably not used to doing. I'm glad that post-production didn't polish it up; the authenticity of the narration was left alone. (In fact, editing and production were somewhat hands off because there were at least two repeated sentences left in.)

This book wasn't just about what happened, it put a human behind the images, which is what a memoir should do. And by the end you are left in no doubt that he doesn't like performing!

Engaging look behind the scenes of the early days of Adam and the Ants.I found the stories behind the songs very interesting. I would have rated the audiobook a 5 Star, however Marcos narration seems to vary. Especially a chapter towards the end which was slightly above mumbling. Would recommend the book.

Great Post-Punk Nostalgia
