About this listen

Meet Emily and Paul: The parents of two young children, Emily is the newly promoted VP of marketing at a large corporation while Paul works from home or from clients' offices as an independent IT consultant. Their lives, like all of ours, are filled with a bewildering blizzard of emails, phone calls, yet more emails, meetings, projects, proposals, and plans. Just staying ahead of the storm has become a seemingly insurmountable task.

In this book, we travel inside Emily and Paul's brains as they attempt to sort the vast quantities of information they're presented with, figure out how to prioritize it, organize it and act on it. Fortunately for Emily and Paul, they're in good hands: David Rock knows how the brain works-and more specifically, how it works in a work setting. Rock shows how it's possible for Emily and Paul, and thus the reader, not only to survive in today's overwhelming work environment but succeed in it-and still feel energized and accomplished at the end of the day.

YOUR BRAIN AT WORK explores issues such as:

- why our brains feel so taxed, and how to maximize our mental resources

- why it's so hard to focus, and how to better manage distractions

- how to maximize your chance of finding insights that can solve seemingly insurmountable problems

- how to keep your cool in any situation, so that you can make the best decisions possible

- how to collaborate more effectively with others

- why providing feedback is so difficult, and how to make it easier

- how to be more effective at changing other people's behavior

Very good; scientific research made applicable to every day situations. Listened twice now and becoming more used to the terms it's already helping the way I work daily and with others.

What did you like most about Your Brain at Work?

Not sure why but I started to listened to this book before and it really didn’t connect with me. Was irritated with the style and the characters. Clearly it must have been my mindset at the time because recently I had a long journey and thought I may as well give it another go and switch to something else if I still don’t like it. Wow! - what a difference on the second attempt. Unlike other listeners, I found the scenarios really helpful and the information I took away is making a real difference. This is the first book that has actually helped me understand the days that just go wrong and how to change it and of course why some days just flow.
I plan to replay it whilst not in the car and take more notes so I can refer to them and help keep me on track.
Highly recommend this, but be aware that you may need to hang in there and get into the subject and characters before fully understanding the message.

Loved it - but only on second attempt

It was good to know it was not just me who, when I get to work find it very hard to concentrate on one thing as my brain decides to jump around all over the place especially when under pressure.

This book brought out several things I know I do - That feeling of dread when 100 emails download in the morning, the lack of focus and the feeling of being constantly interrupted by my own thoughts, putting things off etc

By using the analogy of the stage to represent how your brain works and how much energy somethings require it was really easy to understand the key points from this book. At first I was worried as the narrator started talking about Frontal Cortex, frontal lobes etc and thought this would be a dull listen but by using the characters in the book, couple of busy married people with pressured jobs and typical family life, it made the theories and approaches from the book very relevant, easy to understand and grasp.

Really good audio book if you are trying to focus more and understand how your brain works (at work and at home) and how you need to manage your brain and stop it losing focus and energy then I would recommend this book.

Highly recommended!

Very interesting and relevant!
