ok, but not appropriate for my parenting style

as new parents, we listened to this every weekend intently on what to expect. we got to week 17or 18 and felt some of the advice was not to our style and wasn't alligned to how we want to treat our little girl. we decided to stop listening after the advice on sleep training for naps was along the lines of if they cry...put in ear plugs..and it didn't seem to be meant in good humour....so with that upsetting me, we will no longer use the book in our journey.

Some useful information but not for anxious mums

I see this more as a reference guide to read as your baby reaches each week, rather than a book to inform you during pregnancy. Overall some useful practical guidance, but it’s peppered with lots of ‘don’t do X or your baby could hurt themselves/suffocate/die’ which I found quite shocking. Would not recommend for any anxious mums out there.

Clear and short guidance

Great book although the part of sleep training is tough but authors pointed out that we can choose to do it or not.

Outdated and cruel

Stopped listening after week 16 where it starts advocating for sleep training and crying it out. Not aligned with gentle and responsive parenting and I’d go as far as to say some of the advice borders on neglect! Can’t believe it’s written by mums and a doctor in 21st century!

Advocates sleep training

Very informative, but unfortunately it advocates sleep training and allowing your baby to cry for 15 minutes! Advises against rocking your baby to help them sleep too. So sad and unnecessary. Babies cannot self soothe. They just don't have the cognitive ability.

Struggling? You won't find much comfort here!

I realised pretty early on that for me this book is at best a source of developmental and medical information that is hopefully factual, and at worst a source of stress. I found the tone quite preachy and somewhat cold. At 6 months in I can say that most suggestions didn't ring true to my experience. Breastfeeding is mentioned but treated quite similarly to formula feeding in terms of scheduling. I haven't met a breastfeeding mother yet that could plan like this, and that's normal and difficult, but this book didn't help. More importantly to me babies are not the same. The author acknowledged differences in babies but It seemed that regardless they had a particular target baby in mind. I'm not convinced that this book would help struggling parent

Spot on!

I listened to it a couple of times before our baby was born, but only when he was born and relisten it, I realised how spot on the book is. Esspecially on the baby development stages and on the parent state of mind.

I loved the fact that is balanced. You can choose to follow the advice to have a baby led program or a routine based one. The books instructs you for both, in many of the times advicing for a mix of two which is also my phylosophy.

Chokka full of useful information

This is a step-by-step encyclopaedia to parenthood in the first 6 months. Absolutely chokka full of useful information, guidance on most things a parent needs to know. Where the information is opinion based, it is very much provided as a suggestion rather than a hard fact, allowing any type of parent to glean plenty of useful knowledge without having their beliefs or choices tested too much.

Only reason for dropping a star is because this book is actually better as a reference book in hard copy. Although I did listen to it cover-to-cover, and will probably do so again when baby arrives, having it in hard copy is much more useful to make quick references to as and when things arise.

This book helped me raise my baby

Loved this book so simple and helpful. I don't have many people to ask what to expect or what's 'normal'. Literally, as each week my baby grew the weekly chapters were guiding me. I would have been lost without it. So easy to listen to late at night with the baby in arms. God bless Dr Caroline and Simone Cave.

Some elements are Misleading

Some misleading information shared about feeds and sleep. Useful to keep doing your own research.
