Summary

Throughout his life, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson has needed to overcome many obstacles: His father leaving the family; being considered stupid by his classmates in grade school; growing up in inner-city Detroit; and having a violent temper. But Dr. Carson didn't let his circumstances control him and instead discovered eight principles that helped shape his future.

In You Have a Brain: A Teen's Guide to Think Big, Dr. Carson unpacks the eight important parts of Thinking Big - Talent, Honesty, Integrity, Being Nice, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth Learning, and God - and presents the stories of people who demonstrated those things in his life. By applying the idea of T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. to your life, and by looking at those around you as well, you too can overcome obstacles and work toward achieving your dreams.

My 14 YO and I were hooked!

I love and applaud Dr. Carson’s simple and engaging message. I’ll be reading this book again. It is inspirational with real and tangible examples. I assigned it to my 14 YO after witnessing several instances of his dishonesty. Not wanting to assign something I hadn’t at least skimmed, I started the book and was immediately hooked. My son wasn’t looking forward to a forced ‘punishment’ read, but was soon hooked himself. I often do not finish books. I finished this one! Though I did tune out a bit in the last couple of chapters, and I sped it up during the last chapter about his political interests. I did not like the political agenda in that last chapter. And I was indifferent to the focus on Dr. Carson’s T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. program at the end. The stories and philosophy were enough. Summarizing them into an acronym felt unnecessary and motivated by a separate agenda. I recommend this book to all ages above 11, though I believe middle school aged children will get the most from it. I removed one star from the overall rating because I found the political plug incongruent with the book’s advertised purpose, and with the book’s target audience. Heads up – it does get a little too preachy in the last two chapters, but not enough to discount the awesome delivery of the rest of the story. Read it! You won’t regret it.

More than just platitudes. Excellent listen. I found myself smiling as I listened!

Very encouraging words and story. Narrated well. This is a story that is uplifting and that offers practical steps to take beyond the book. It is so much better than the typical "I-was-a-victim-of-the-system" stories out there.
