Summary

For girls and young women these are shifting times: never before have they had so much freedom and choice, but never before have they had so many demands placed upon them—by themselves as well as others.

Writing directly to girls and young women, Dr Tara Porter draws on decades of experience to offer them insight into their own psychology. From exams to friendship, from families to love, Tara pulls together everything she has learnt to provide accessible explanations and suggestions for teenagers and young women everywhere. Like a warm letter from a wise friend or big sister, You Don't Understand Me not only understands the young person's perspectives but guides them through their challenges they face.

You Don't Understand Me is uniquely written to teenagers and young women. But in explaining young women to themselves, it also provides an indispensable guide to their parents: a glimpse behind the rolled eyes and the protestations their daughter makes: 'you don't understand me'.

Essential reading for your daughters and sisters.

This was really engaging. I wanted to read it before I give it to my daughter. I wish a book like this had been written for me when I was a teenager.

Wish I had a chance to read it 25 years ago

Wish this book was around when I was a teen. In fact, I wish it was around when my mum, and her mum, were teens... And now I'm going to buy a paperback copy for my teenage step-daughter, and suggest her dad reads it, too. It's written in a professional, comforting but non-patronising way, the author is not trying to be down with the kids but doesn't sound like another preaching adult, and backs the contents with plenty of scientific, professional and personal experience.
And if, like me, you struggle with audibooks due to many narrators' voices/accents/mannerisms, definitely give this one a chance. The voice is very pleasant, soothing even, but engaging at the same time.

Must read for teenage girls.

I have just finished listening to this book and have bought a hard copy for my daughter to read. It’s an honest and positive guide to the challenges young girls (and boys) can face growing up in today’s world.

should have read it when i was a teenager

i have a daughter so i thought i would try to understand the mindset of a teenage girl.

though this book is aimed at that demographic, the advice given and perspectives revealed I believe are useful.

I do not align with all of the views some completely others not to it’s level but the over all message and takeaway, i’d recommend to my daughter and son.
