Summary

Is it possible to heal by thought alone - without drugs or surgery? The truth is that it happens more often than you might expect. In You Are the Placebo, Dr. Joe Dispenza shares numerous documented cases of those who reversed cancer, heart disease, depression, crippling arthritis, and even the tremors of Parkinson’s disease by believing in a placebo. Similarly, Dr. Joe tells of how others have gotten sick and even died the victims of a hex or voodoo curse - or after being misdiagnosed with a fatal illness. Belief can be so strong that pharmaceutical companies use double- and triple-blind randomized studies to try to exclude the power of the mind over the body when evaluating new drugs.

Dr. Joe does more than simply explore the history and the physiology of the placebo effect. He asks the question: “Is it possible to teach the principles of the placebo, and without relying on any external substance, produce the same internal changes in a person’s health and ultimately in his or her life?” Then he shares scientific evidence (including color brain scans) of amazing healings from his workshops, in which participants learn his model of personal transformation, based on practical applications of the so-called placebo effect. The book ends with a “how-to” meditation for changing beliefs and perceptions that hold us back - the first step in healing.

You Are the Placebo combines the latest research in neuroscience, biology, psychology, hypnosis, behavioral conditioning, and quantum physics to demystify the workings of the placebo effect...and show how the seemingly impossible can become possible.

50 minutes in, and full of self promotion

50 minutes in, and full of self promotion. 50 minutes in, and starting to get really bored of this book, waiting for something useful to be revealed. The entire preface is a rambling self-promotion about the authors other books and courses. The so-called introduction, so far spent 15 minutes just telling me all about what he’s going to tell me, and I’m wondering whether he’s ever going to get to telling me anything of value. I’ll give it another 15 minutes, then I’m done and on to something more practical

Great book with great narration

Another great book by Dr. Joe Dispenza. It's easy to be discouraged at the beginning of the book by the abundance of information that the writer provides, but when you take your time and find a suitable pace, the book will open so many windows in your head that, at one point, you will start to laugh because you know that they were there all the time... but somebody needed to hand you a wet cloth to wipe the dirt off:)

Important message, not keen on the style

I love the anecdotes and general message. But the style grates on me. I would have preferred more of a "here are some fascinating stories and this is my opinion", including the eeg results which are shared. Instead I heard " this method works. I am right and amazing. Buy my other products."
I did experience a mind-altering meditation after listening. I do think it works, just not a fan of the American-ness of it.

No matter what your views or opinions, a wonderfully insightful listen

Dr JD , makes some very bold claims. Some may or may not chose to believe.
However there is no disputing he backed up everything he said with science , brain scans and other visible (accessible) to the reader accounts.
The story’s/testimonies were just completely consuming, believable , authentic and again backed with medical records and progression scans of the brain.
Everything is explained very clearly, and easy to understand to anyone new to any of the methods he talks about.
Genuinely well authored and written. One of those can’t put down , turn off reads .
Lots of advice - no hate keeping at all.
Really made me look at several aspects of my life and consider change in literally everything I do.
I’m going to listen again with a notebook and pen and take action on some very simple points.
You don’t have to reach very far to believe what this man is saying . It’s not too spiritual that ppl without a knowledge of spiritual vocabulary would get lost , it’s not religious, it’s not offensive. It’s easy. It’s generous and it makes so much sense .
Even if you action nothing , I swear the reference stories are just mind blowing and things we don’t get to hear about often. That alone makes this worth the read/listen.
Very wise man. First time coming across his work.
I admire the life of service he has dedicated himself too. If nothing else this man has single handedly saved countless lives . I’ve no doubt about that - & most of them he will never speak to in person.
Definitely worth the credit . All scientific materials are provided in a pdf to reference at the appropriate stages.
Loved it - highly recommend

Very good, though very similar to his past works

I think I’d start by saying that if you’re new to Dispenza’s work, you’ll more than likely enjoy this one. It’s chock-full of wisdom, insights, and studies explaining how so much of what happens in our lives is a result of our thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs. As the title explains, we are the placebo; we can use our minds to transform our lives.

However, if you’ve read any of his previous works, such as “Evolve Your Brain” or “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself,” then you’ll likely find that there’s not all that much new content here. If you’re a die-hard fan of Dispenza’s, then this will be nothing to worry about, but if you’re just a “regular” fan, you might find this one to be frustratingly “too much of the same old thing.”

As a stand-alone book, this is a very good title in its own right. However, I just have to knock a star off for the lack of originality when compared to its predecessors. There’s all the normal Dispenza-style content here, so whether you end up enjoying this one will likely depend on if you think that’s a good or bad thing. I’d recommend, but only if you haven’t already read “Evolve Your Brain” and “Breaking the Habit.”

Terrible Choice for Audio

Recommend reading print version for all the referenced figures. 90% of the book is about the "why" and examples, and the last 10% is about the "how", but just references "figures" for meditation guides which are of no use when listening to the book.

it is a sales pitch for the meditations

I kept waiting to get to the meditation part only to find out that it's something else you need to buy or read to yourself on a pdf.

This book had good stories and it was trying to explain his point of view. But it was overly long to just convince me to do meditation. I always try to ask myself at the end of the book will I read this again? The answer is most likely no. I am gonna try buying his meditations and I will update this if I can.

Best read, not listened to

This is an excellent and informative book. There are graphs and figures which do not translate well to audio, as well as some important meditations in the end, which do not come across in the audio version.

A little woo-woo for my taste

The placebo effect exists and it's real. I have no doubt that some things happen without a physical cause, and I believe that the substance we call "life" is more than atoms and molecules bumping into one another. Yet in this book are a few scientifically-disproved theories being dispensed as fact, and many of the anecdotes sound pretty sketchy. Having said that, as one who has difficulty meditating - heck, I even have difficulty sleeping - because my thinking brain and its stress 100% runs the show, I do look forward to giving the 3-week suggested meditation practice a try. I've wasted more time doing less valuable things.

Possibly my most important take-away is the need for persistence and patience. I love the example of the stallion turning toward the mares and being repeatedly, gently yet firmly, redirected ahead.

LISTEN AND LEARN

I feel like so many people have such a closed mind when it comes to books like these.

Complaining about the simplest things like the narrator and there not being FREE meditations and not finding the PDF files.

If you find the narrator borning speed up the narration (which is done on the page. If you are looking for free mediations go on youtube and find them (they are everywhere). If you are lokking for the accompanied pdf’s, click on the top right icon on the page and scroll down, print the pages and have them next to you so you can follow allong.

Dr. Dispenza has put in a great effort to deliver teachings that is of major importance in today’s living, curcumstances and overall consciousness.

He is one of the very few people that has actually lived through what he is teaching. You will NOT undestand This book if you do not approach it with a totally open mind And a real want to change your life and your overall consciousness.

There are way too many people that is neglecting his teachings with extremely negetive comments and it is not fair towards someone who is actually trying to enlighten the mass of what their mind are capable of. This is his life’s work and should be treated with itmost repect because he is comming from a place of love and peace.

About the marketing aspects of his book in regards to his workshops and meditations that are available for purchase—- nothing in this world is free (we all know that).. that being said, if something is given for free the value of it is automatically reduced because of how our minds work… we do not take it seriously and the drive will soon disappear. When you are told that his mediations and workshops are available for purchase, he is simply saying that once you have read one of his books and you are not regarding this as “just another book” or “just another bunch of spiritual garbage”, and you actually understand that his teachings will take you to another level of consciousness that you have NEVER EXPERIENCED.. and u are serious about changing your life and your future on this earth then his mediations and workshops is your next level of reaching these heights. This is powerfull in its own once you grasp the level of what this man is trying to tell you.

Please respect these type of teachings because they are absolut gold if followed through by YOUR efforts.

All said with love and honor to the human race.

A game changing book for healing of all kinds

Dr. Joe Dispenza has daringly put forth a most fascinating and hopeful idea and about self healing - healing through the unknown through meditation and finding the balance between over trying and over surrendering. He bases his ideas on sound biological information and that’s where he really shines. However, when it came to talking about quantum mechanics such as saying how we need to become like waves to change matter because matter cannot change matter, or spin at a faster vibration I found this part to be unsupported by evidence and not thoroughly explained. The author’s lack of understanding in this particular field of science became quite apparent. This is not to say that his overall message is not true and that the most important thing regardless of whether the QM stuff is true, is the potential and possibility for each individual to go beyond survival, to heal, and to thrive and live in joy. Marrying elevated positive emotions with the deep desire/intention to change our condition based upon a foundational conviction that this change is indeed possible is the doorway to amazing transformation (this is certainly not a new idea and also promoted by others in the self healing or personal transformation space). The key to this doorway as eloquently explained by Dr. Dispenza is meditation and surrender to the unknown where we can be touched by an unconditional love and light that is beyond us and experience wholeness and joy beyond words.

Literally Mind Blowing!

This is the most phenomenal guide to personal and world transformation I’ve ever read/listened to! It is uplifting in its optimism it demonstrates for the potential each and every one of us holds to transcend limitation and live exactly the unbounded life we are all meant to live! I am blown away!!!

Starts strong, devolves in to BS

Some good ideas, meditation, self inducing placebo state. These things are possible and potentially good.

But most of the book is junk science and the author trying to sell you on his programs.
