Story
The grieving widower. The motherless daughters. A beautiful house in the woods. Deep in a remote Norwegian forest, Lexi has found a new home with architect Tom and his two young daughters. With snow underfoot and the sound of the nearby fjord in her ears, it’s as if Lexi has stepped into a fairy tale. But this family has a history – and this place has a past. Something was destroyed to build their beautiful new house. And those ancient, whispering woods have a long memory. Lexi begins to hear things, see things that don’t make sense.

Story
Fran finds her standing by the swings. A little girl, Esther, no older than seven years old, by herself in the dead of night, her pretty but old-fashioned yellow dress covered in grass stains and her hair dishevelled. She says she's waiting for Father, and that strikes Fran as particularly odd. After Esther is reunited with her family, Fran can't stop thinking about this pious child whose imaginary friend is God. Fran's instincts tell her something is very wrong. Why does Esther keep running away from home, and how did she get that bruise on her leg?

Thea is an insomniac; she hasn’t slept more than three hours a night for years. So when an ad for a sleep trial that promises to change her life pops up on her phone, Thea knows this is her last chance at finding any kind of normal life. Soon Thea’s sleeping for longer than she has in a decade and awakes feeling transformed. So much so that at first she’s willing to overlook the oddities of the trial - the lack of any phone signal; the way she can’t leave her bedroom without permission; the fact that all her personal possessions are locked away, even her shoes.

Ava only left her daughter in the pushchair for five minutes. The buckle was fastened, and she was sure it was safe. But when she came downstairs, the door was open and Abi was gone - she walked down the road, past the Lovegoods' house, and was never seen again. A year later, the Lovegoods throw a housewarming party, showing off the results of their renovation. Ava doesn’t want to go. She can’t bear to look down that end of the road, to see the place where Abi vanished, and she doesn’t want to spend time with people who don’t share her grief.

Summary
'There are those who claim the ghosts walking the corridors of Sfântul Mihail are not ghosts at all.'
During a midnight journey snaking through the Carpathian Mountains, these are the words whispered to Cath Fenwick. It is the warning she will later wish she'd taken more seriously.
When Cath receives her invitation to The Event - a monetised retreat for social media influencers - she can't believe her luck. Irene Jobert is the most famous influencer in the world, and now Cath will be one of the five participants chosen to stay with Irene in a renovated Transylvanian monastery.
The catch? Their every move will be live-streamed to millions of people around the world. Patrons pay for constant access to their favourite social media stars: Irene, the model, Nathan, the gamer, Jules, the blogger, Daniel, the fitness guru and Cath, the writer. Nestled halfway up a mountain, surrounded by forests teeming with nature, the five are isolated, with nothing but the internet to connect them to the world. That is, until eagle-eyed live-stream followers all around the globe notice a sixth participant. A dark figure lurking in the background. Who - or what - is in the monastery with them?
Wolves roam the nearby forests. Shadows haunt the long corridors of Sfântul Mihail. Slowly, five lonely people begin to lose their minds. You are invited to The Event.

Missed opportunity and some deeply unpleasant elements
I loved the plot of this story. social media influencers invited to a sort of big brother experience with a supernatural element. i wish more stories existed with such contemporary themes, sadly this one fell flat. the story started ok tho I was confused at the lack of attendees / characters. there appeared to be only four invited to the event. why ? dan, nathan, jules and the narrator, and all were weird / whiny. except nothing happens other than the narrator making tea and thinking about herself. then a token walk or two, some disturbed nights, a party and the narrator thinking about herself even more. yes it got old very quickly, and such self obsession unpleasantly very z generation. she feels some sort of connection with a dead nun, whose story also ends up as an anticlimax so very sadly no ghosts at all. there are wolves who behave like werewolves for some reason, but they are not supernatural either, and the story would have been a great deal better if they were. them a deeply unpleasant and lazy denouement, child porn and nasty graphic violence, blamed on mental illness. please can writers stop with mentally ill people being violent, can they also stop with the baddie also always being a violent alcoholic. such incorrect and belittling stereotypes of serious conditions should have no place in modern story telling. finally, an awful style of narration. shouty and one toned, it hurt my ears. this novel is, more than anything, a missed opportunity. the real story wouldve had more characters, less violence and some real ghosts or vampires. i mean what even was the point of setting it in Romania if not to have a supernatural story.

A modern social media influenced whodunnit
This is a very modern whodunnit where 5 social influencers have gathered in a spooky ex monastery (which was home to nuns and not monks) in Transylvania - Dracula country- for The Event where they will be streamed 24 hours a day to subscribers. The story is told by Cath, an author of fantasy novels. On arrival she finds out that the nuns who lived there were all slaughtered in 1946, and only the Abbess survived. Sarah Denzil writes so well and the book had me hooked from the beginning. The suspense and menace builds throughout and I had goosebumps while listening, though I wouldn't class this as horror. The setting of the oppressive haunted monastery is described brilliantly, as are the surrounding mountains and the forests where wolves prowl. I liked Cath and her battles with her mental health felt realistic, though the other characters were all unlikeable. I loved the ending, which took me by surprise. The narration by Robyn Addison was perfect for the book.

A wonderfully intelligent read.
Thank you author for not copping out down the many easy plot routes. On one occasion I saw an “easy out” coming and literally yell at you not to take it, much to the surprise of my husband who was asleep at the time. It’s a truly fresh idea, well and fearlessly handled. Maybe not the most comfortable narrative but so well told. The characters are believable, I’ve met several of them in my life, and none are totally good or bad. Their reactions are credible if extreme. Treat yourself and listen to this. PS. The reading in a regional accent added immeasurably to the experience.

Sarah Denzil does it again!
Fantastic book. as usual Sarah delivers another fab psychological thriller. This time it reflects social media influencers at their 'stuck up, greedy, fame hungry finest' without giving too much away the book goes on to show the facard we put on hardly ever reflects what is going on when the camera is turned off. LBQT, mental health and our social media obsession runs throughout the ghost story and the environment of the very creepy Romanian monastery in the snow covered wilderness only adds to the atmosphere. Overall a brilliant story, with a really good performance from the narrator. Sarah's books are always so enthralling and she has a way of enveloping the reader right into the plot, as the atmosphere is described so well. Awaiting the next... Thank you. 📚📖

Constant unbalanced plot keeps it moving
What a whirlwind this psychological horror novel is, and it is a great reminder of how social media drives people to do much for money. Wonderfully creepy setting with believable characters who can’t trust their eyes, what’s happening to them, or one another. The unreliable narrator works exceptionally well in this tale.
