Summary

Lord Yamada is called away - one last time - from his newly restored estates in Kamakura to help Prince Kanemore ensure that Princess Teiko's son, Takahito, inherits the Chrysanthemum Throne. Unfortunately, assuming the throne proves to be the easy part. Yamada must then help Takahito renounce that throne in such a way as to hobble the power of the Fujiwara clan forever!

Excellent conclusion to a

.... to a fabulously entertaining series. Books two through four are written as more traditional books in series, but could still stand alone.
Our Hero, Yamada no Goji, is twelve years beyond the loss of his true love, around five years after the posthumous exoneration of his father's name and three years beyond gaining substantial wealth and land in Kamakura and adopting two teenagers after the events in book three.
His daughter is married and has produced a grandchild. His son is showing a prodigious talent and working hard in horse rearing and training at the family estate. His closest friend Kenji is now Abbot at the nearby Buddhist temple Lord Yamada has build and dedicated. A niggling discontentment of wanting more but feeling he will never have it, haunts him..... along with some mysterious ghost lights which begin to appear ohis newest adventure
He and Kenji set out on the road to Kyoto at the behest of Prince Kanamore, on what will prove to be his most intellectually challenging, but no less dangerous adventure yet.
It brings new friendships and tests old ones in a nicely woven dark fantaasy which twists about in almost satisfactory manner. Expect the usual mix of ghosts, ghouls and yokai.
