About this listen

The Second World War was one of the most traumatic events in human history. Across the world, existing conflicts became connected, entangling nations in a vast web of violence. It was fought on land, sea, and air, touching every inhabited continent. Over 55 million people died, some of them combatants, some civilians caught up in the violence, and some murdered by their own governments. It was the war that unleashed the Holocaust and the atomic bomb upon the world. But it was also a war that featured acts of courage and self-sacrifice on every side.

Any additional comments?

The author obviously made the decision to give to a detailed factual account, an almost daily blow by blow chronicle, opposed to a more interpretive analysis and he has succeeded as far as one can succeed with this one dimensional story telling.

An extremely well written history of all of the war. This was not a history of selected parts of the conflict, but a history of the complete war.

An Extremely Good Book

Any additional comments?

Excellent book in providing not only the big picture of the international dynamics of the war period but also the details and individual tragedies, heroism, and sacrifices.

Any additional comments?

This is a massive and detailed history. Its focus is on what happened, rather than why it happened. Although the book doesn't actually do this, it feels as if the author is giving a day by day account of the main events of the war. This approach can be a bit trying, but the effect for those who stay the course is powerful. The sheer weight and mass of the brutality of the war builds page after page.

Packed With Massive Details

Any additional comments?

The level of detail that this author has taken is impressive. I found this book also hard to put down. This volume covers the war in a day-by-day chronological history with references to later events to tie lives together.
