Summary

Explore the captivating history of World War 1!

The first World War was one of the most devastating conflicts in our history. The tumult and chaos that remained in the wake of the first World War had far-reaching and devastating consequences, not just for Europe and the survivors of the war, but for the entire world. The ruins of Europe provided a fertile breeding ground for fierce nationalism, which led to the rise of the Third Reich and allowed the evil of Adolf Hitler to go unchecked for far too long.

In this audiobook, you will discover topics such as:

  • The fatal shots that set the stage for war
  • The Western front and the first Battle of Marne
  • War in the trenches
  • The Eastern front and the Battle of Tannenberg
  • The Battle of Ypres and the Christmas Truce
  • Second Battle of Ypres and the introduction of chemical warfare
  • Chemical warfare on the Western front
  • My boy Jack, the very human cost of the first World War
  • The Gallipoli campaign
  • The Battle of Jutland
  • The decline of the Russian empire
  • The Battle of Verdun
  • The Battle of the Somme
  • America joins the war
  • The final days of the war and the Treaty of Versailles
  • World leaders who played a pivotal role in the first World War
  • And much, much more!

Good book from British view

A marvelous history by an excellent writer. The First World War has set the bloody pattern of warfare and politics in the 20th Century.. A must read to understand the present geopolitical situation. the author convinces me that the tragedy of the past is ever present.

Worth the time!

This book furnished more information about the horror of trench warfare, but also the extent of the overall locations where the participants were engaged. Many of these locations were never mentioned in my various history classes.

Very general and the narrator can’t pronounce most of the names/places

A pretty general history of WWI, but devoid of interesting or original insights. The narrator mispronounced just about every Non-English word, of which there were many. Surprising they didn’t have someone who could pronounce these things, given that his whole job was to read the words.

Solid, but not for beginners

The book makes excellent use of pictures. It provides a generous section of color plates, most of which I had never seen before, and drops in many fascinating black and white pictures at relevant moments -- all are well selected to reveal the character of events.

Amazing

This is a book about the causes and highlights of the war. It is not a detailed look at all the individual battles. It is an overview that gives the military and political highlights I am in awe of his research, analysis, and his skillful writing.

The Great War

I found it an extremely well written and absorbing book, by an author, who clearly knows his history. However facing such a huge subject to be put into one volume, the writer has had to reduce and miss much. I certainly would have liked a greater discussion on the economic of the war.

Recommended!

It discusses the develpment of senior staffs to coordinate the massive movements that the railroads afforded. It discusses the power and limitations of artillery when communications are so easily disrupted. These types of background materials make it easier to understand the battle descriptions.
