Carl was a regular construction foreman. Not the worst, not the best, and definitely not the thinnest. Even so, he didn't deserve that heart attack! He really didn't deserve being reborn into a dog-eat-dog world as a dragon. To be fair, it’s nice to be at the top of the food chain. Now Carl just needs to learn how magic works, which monsters are safe to eat, and why his hoard is so important to him. Dealing with change is hard enough, but he has enemy dragons incoming, hostile environments, and foes constantly trying to get bragging rights by taking down a dragon.

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

Summary
The humans call me Nemon Fargus. They call me wizard, and [Elementalist] and [Enchanter]. They call me teacher. They call me adventurer.
But I don't care. Not anymore.
For more than 150 years I've served the Kingdom of Sena. Through four kings and a queen. Two wars and a rebellion. I've founded and taught at a magic school. I've fought against beast waves and dungeon breaks.
But now? Now, the one close friend I had left has passed. So, I'm done with their politics and their economics. The short and busy lives of humans are more burden than benefit on the weary soul of this half-elf.
Now, I'm looking for a refuge, a place that can well and truly be my own. Away from the growing cities and the bustling markets, away from the pointless wars, away from the eager students and the arrogant adventurers.
I'm seeking the peaceful life of a wizard in his tower, studying magic to advance my spellcraft.... We'll see if that happens.
Experience the start of a LitRPG epic from Gregory Allanther, the best-selling author of An Old Man's Journey.

Loved it
TLDR; After years of adventuring an aged wizard decided sod it, I'm done with people, I'm going to go live in a tower. Only life is rarely that simple.
In many ways more slice of life, tower building, but leading to a bigger story. A highly enjoyable read for people looking for something a bit different.
What's it about
Our MC is a half elf and after hundreds of years of wars, teaching and adventuring, and having watched one of his oldest (and longest living) friends die in a botched adventure he decides to retire. Setting out to the hinterlands he plans to build a tower and spend the next couple decades/centuries researching leaving his old life behind.
Why I enjoyed it
For anyone who has read Old Man's Journey by Gregory Allanther, this book feels like a natural progression in his writing (though the two books are unrelated).
Our MC has lived a long life and doesn't suffer fools gladly, there are times when he is the "grumpy old man", yet he is still occasionally prone to rash decisions. There is a tenderness to his character. He has made enough mistakes in his past that he is no fool. While his past has shaped him, he isn't ready to die.
What I particularly like however is that he is incredibly well written as a long lived individual and acts often as such, not necessarily slowly but with deliberation, but still living and as I mentioned earlier capable of swift or rash decisions and emotion.
The first book is not about a reluctant mage who is forced to be a hero again and fight a BBEG but instead has more of a slice of life feeling as he struggles against the world, which is not ready to let him merely sit back.
I've always got a soft point for base building and this has a nice level, ready to fight off monster waves.
The narration is tip top. I've already written a post about how much I was taken in, after listening to it for only two minutes and having listened to the whole book I'm still sold.
There are a lot of hints of lore and things to come, which really help draw me in and make me look forward to the next read.
Why you might not like it
While there is action, if you are looking for an action and tension centred book, then this might not be the first stop for you. It feels more like a slice of life story, with future potential.
This is not about someone from another world who is isekaied or logged in, so the MC isn't so much an everyman.
Overall
I really enjoyed it, if you are looking for something a bit different then I recommend it.

Who actually cares…?
It’s possible the 2nd half of the book picks up, but I can’t listen anymore. Old crotchety “get off my lawn!” wizard retires from adventuring to live in a wizard tower he builds away from government and people. This is the story of his retirement, from landscaping, to enslaving bandits to do the heavy lifting, to teaching two uninteresting pupils, and on and on, but you don’t actually care about any of them. At hour 7, there are no stakes…no suspense…no backstory…no reason to care at all. If somebody comes to disturb his retirement, then what? He’s lived for 200+ years and he forgets to turn off runes or defensive arrays that nuke people’s heads entering/leaving the property? Oops. Should probably fix that. The book eludes to a dungeon breaking and having to defend his Florida retirement tower… So what? Why, after halfway through the story, should anybody care about this? It’s probably the most boring LitRPG I have in a vast library of audiobooks and I’m SUPER forgiving, especially in this genre, but the all-stars at Soundbooth Theater couldn’t make this story interesting. Absolute snooze fest. Needless to say I don’t recommend this to anybody.

The Start of an Epic? [Spoilers]
This story can barely be classified as a LitRPG. Yes, there are levels, but everything about the system of the world is kept so vague. I'm literally 1 hour 34 min from completing this rubbish and I still have no idea what the MC's Character sheet even looks like. Let alone skill levels or stats. I assume this is to keep the constant BS of super convenient spells, items, and skills the MC has accrued throughout his lifetime available for when the Author writes himself into a corner and can't be bothered to think of a clever out for the MC, revise the previous chapters, or rethink the plot.
This isn't the start of a story in anyway, shape, or form, The MC is already one of the most powerful spellcasters in all the land! He defeats small armies with ridiculous ease.
-One time he was literally lazing about on a chair above the battlefield casually eating his breakfast.
-Earlier in the story he gets ambushed by a monster and it dies immediately because the author suddenly decided to inform the reader that there were "Powerful Protections" MC had placed on his robes.
-These Beast waves that supposedly have the potential to destroy entire Baronies if not taken care of immediately are destroyed with 2-4 casual spell casts.
-Every single "Challenge" MC faces is immediately resolved with little to no effort.
-Every Political Opponent MC faces is Horrifically incompetent.
-And Every person that comes into contact with this petty, arrogant, vain, Gary Stew Protagonist thinks he's just the best thing ever. Unless they are villains in which case they die or learn they are wrong for thinking poorly of this painfully dull MC.
TL:DR:
-Too vague of a game system to be a competent LitRPG
-MC Gary Stew is the most powerful because of plot

Another hilarious grumpy old man.
I was a big fan of Old Man's Journey, and this book doesn't disappoint. The Wizard is a great mix of trying to get people to better themselves and trying to get the same people to leave him alone. The narrators bring the story to life.
Note: this book is not a serious dark journey, its an middle age half elf that just wants to do a little research and be left alone along the way.

Don't waist your credit
Another reviewer summed up is great, but I will add a little to this. He is pretending to be a old man, but based on his race. He's is only in his 30's and to other races like full elves, he is a teenager and has zero rights to be the way he is. He is NOT the big dog in the land, the author already pointed out other Gold adventurers that are HUMAN and doing the same job at a 10th of the time this lazy jerk has.
He is truly selfish and he does fall truly in the Gary Stew category.
""Old crotchety “get off my lawn!” wizard retires from adventuring to live in a wizard tower he builds away from government and people. Awful story, good performance.
The story was so extremely boring. I'm a fan of sound booth theater and these 3 voice actors. But this plot was terrible. The story seemed like it was setting a stage for the next book. The last 15 min were great. Everything before that was a snore.

Gregory Allanther puts a unique flair on litRPG's.
After reading Old Man's Journey another gamelit novel by Gregory Allanther I really wasn't sure what to expect from Wizard's Tower, however I knew that it'd be unique! And I wasn't wrong...
This story's about another grumpy old man Nemon Fargus a half elf, who wants to retire from it all. From his life as a teacher, mentor, benefactor, and an adventurer! His goal is to find an outta the way Tower and continue his own studies and experimentation. But, alas life gets in the way! So he finds himself torn from being grumpy to nurturing... And you can't help but like Nemon Fargus. And yes, there's still monster waves to stop!
You're definitely gonna want to add this to your library. Although the action takes the back seat, the book is smartly written and really interesting!
This happens to be the third production I've heard from Soundbooth Theater and I want to say they have Dynamite productions. The narration is done by Justin Thomas James, Jeff Hays, and Andrea Parsneau... and that's what I call a great combination of voice performers!

Wounderful Story
I really appreciate the writers work on this Story. Characters were well written and the Storyline was well executed. Narrator's in this Audible book did a Great job with the various characters voices and in the entire storyline. Highly recommend, I had a hard time not sitting through the entire book all in one sitting.
