About this listen

Inside

A year ago Sophie Wickham stumbled into the isolated Lancashire village of Withered Hill, naked, alone and with no memory of who she is.

Surrounded by a thick ring of woodland, its inhabitants seem to be of another world, drenched in pagan, folklorish traditions.

As Sophie struggles to regain the memories of her life from before, she quickly realises she is a prisoner after multiple failed escape attempts. But is it the locals who keep her trapped, with smiles on their faces, or something else, lurking in the woods?

Outside

In London, Sophie leads a chaotic life, with too many drunken nights, inappropriate men and boring temp jobs. But things take a turn as she starts to be targeted by strange messages warning her that someone, or something, is coming for her.
With no idea who to trust, or where to turn for help, the messages become more insistent and more intimidating, urging Sophie to make her way to a place called Withered Hill…

An utterly bewitching, dual timeline folk horror story, with a truly devastating twist you have to hear to believe.

Wow, deliciously macabre, psychological disturbing and cleverly done! Set up as two different timeliness, this is a challenge at first, a slow, creepy burn that just catches fire in the last 20%. I am floored by that conclusion:
"When there are enough of them, what then?"
When we first meet Sophie Wickham, she is a 32 yr old woman living in London, hedonism and a lack of direction are her vices. Her friends have moved on with their lives, while Sophie works temp jobs. Soon into her latest job, weird messages and threatening packages start to warn her of dangers, until one day she is lost, with no memory in a wood at the entrance of a village called Withered Hill.
Who and what is this place? Thus begins an intricate tale, cryptic riddles and bizarre rituals. The pace and writing is slow and methodical, drawing you into the people of Withered Hill. Folk horror definitely has its perks!

Creepy rituals

I felt for Sophieon the outside, however, I was bored with the inside parts of the story. I didn't care much for them and there over sexed festivals. The ending was anti climatic.

Not a horror

Felt like a really nice way to blend honest folklore with a modern setting, which isn’t easy to do without cheapening the feel of the lore.

The reveal was great!

I don’t know what I’d expected from this book, but it certainly wasn’t this. What a weird and wonderful book, full of layers, twists, and turns. One of the best things I’ve listened to in ages!

Weird and wonderful!
