A Mystery with a touch of Magic
- By Darcy B on 19-11-21
Summary
An Amazon Charts bestseller.
A gripping novel about family secrets...and coming home for the first time.
Still grieving the loss of her wandering, free-spirited mother, Lucy Kincaid leaves Nashville for the faded town of Cape Hudson, Virginia. She goes to see the house she’s inherited - one she never knew existed, bequeathed to her by a woman she’s never even met. At the heart of this mystery is the hope that maybe - just maybe - this “Winter Cottage” will answer the endless questions about her mother’s past...including the identity of her birth father.
Rather than the quaint Virginian bungalow Lucy expected, Winter Cottage is a grand old estate of many shadows - big enough to hold a century of secrets, passions, and betrayals. It also comes with a handsome and enigmatic stranger, a man next in line to claim Lucy’s inheritance.
Now, as Lucy sifts through the past, uncovering the legacy of secrets that Winter Cottage holds, she’ll come to discover as much about her family history as she does about herself. In searching, she could finally find the one thing she’s never really had: a home.
Critic reviews

Complicated family ties
A school project on an old lady’s memories turns into a tangled web of family secrets & the inheritance of a rambling old house. An interesting & original plot. Fairly easy listening except that I personally found it hard to keep track of the characters due to the style of jumping back & forth in time. I may have to listen to it again sometime to fully understand who was who, so don’t think I didn’t enjoy it.
The author did begin every new shift in time by heading the chapter ‘LUCY’ etc, so that did help, but I struggled to get to grips with some of the family connections.

An absolutely LOVELY READ❤️
I really enjoyed this book❤️Mary Ellen Taylor is on my list of favorite authors in this genre by far🥰I LOVE the way she so beautifully weaves the stories of her characters from two different eras into one❤️Her characters so deeply touch my heart and soul with each and every chapter I read❤️
I cried and I got goosebumps at times~along with feeling so many other emotions throughout the book….I LOVE THAT❤️I find myself wanting to be friends, if not part of the family, with some of the characters lol!
I don’t want the book to end because I’m so invested in them! That’s a sign of an AMAZING and GIFTED author❤️
I have already finished reading her next novel that follows this one~Spring Cottage~and it was as LOVELY and as BEAUTIFULLY written as this was❤️I LOVED the continuation of the characters and their stories as well as some new ones❤️Once again, the weaving together of the characters and their different eras into one is so wonderfully done❤️It’s so BEAUTIFUL and GRIPPING the way Taylor does it❤️
The narrator was absolutely AMAZING ❤️Shannon McManus made the story that much more BEAUTIFUL to listen to❤️She does such a WONDERFUL job at making each character come to life❤️BRAVO❤️

Find Home/Family
The narrator was good, working well with the story so I could easily just listen and not think; not distracting.
The main character just wants a place to call home.
Will she find it,or need to keep looking. Why is she here, in a place she had not heard of just before her mother passed.
Definitely a found family kind of story; finding home.
I will look at more of this authors work, a good story that was a fun back and forth between the past fictional history of the cottage and present of the main characters journey of why she is there.
At the very end of the book some recipes from the story of cake and pie are shared by the author. I might try them (the chocolate frosting sounded good),seemed like a fun touch.
There is a second book with another of the characters that was named in this book. Have added it to my library, hope it is as good as this one.
Warning of a SA (fictional) mentioned and described much further along in the story. While it was written with an idea of the story plot and of the characters story involved, it was sudden and may be helpful to be aware of. (Fictional) physical abuse of a child/minor for a couple of characters. To also be aware of. Though all brief in comparison to the whole story.

Good narration of a thin plot
Although the book was enjoyable in the beginning, the outcomes were quite predictable. There were sex scenes that were unnecessary, and one in which a character has sex right after having a baby. Really??? This author should read books written by Kate Morton, Daphne du Maurier, and others to learn how to develop the plot. The ending was abrupt. With all that being said, the narrator did a wonderful job.

Such A Great Book!!
This is one of the best books that I have listened to in a long time. Some books take a while to get into, but from the very beginning, I was hooked. The storyline was great and you completely became vested in the characters. I didn't want to stop listening. It was so good!
