About this listen

Hockey is Gabe Martin's life. Dante Baltierra just wants to have some fun on his way to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Falling for a teammate isn't in either game plan.

But plans change.

When Gabe gets outed, it turns his careful life upside-down. The chaos messes with his game and sends his team headlong into a losing streak. The last person he expects to pull him through it is Dante.

This season isn't going the way Dante thought it would. Gabe's sexuality doesn't faze him, but his own does. Dante's always been a "what you see is what you get" kind of guy, and having to hide his attraction to Gabe sucks. But so does losing, and his teammate needs him, so he puts in the effort to snap Gabe out of his funk.

He doesn't mean to fall in love with the guy.

Getting involved with a teammate is a bad idea, but Dante is shameless, funny, and brilliant at hockey. Gabe can't resist. Unfortunately, he struggles to share part of himself that he's hidden for years, and Dante chafes at hiding their relationship. Can they find their feet before the ice slips out from under them?

Winging It is the first book in the hot, hilarious, heartfelt Hockey Ever After series. If you like witty banter, friends to lovers, and sports romance, you'll love Winging It.

Was super excited to get into this series after my 6 month long Heated Rivalry obsession, everyone recommended the series too me and was especially looking forward to the third book but wanted to start from number 1 ofc.

I really wish I hadn’t bothered using a credit unfortunately, I just didn’t jell well with this book at all. I can’t really put my finger on why but the fact I’ve listened to it all over the last two days and can’t really remember any of the plot says it all. I remember getting to around the 6 hour mark and realising there was still HOURS left. It was such a drag if I’m being honest.

The few things I do remember was even by the end, Gabe and Dante just seem like good friends who hook up sometimes. I just didn’t feel any spark or chemistry between them apart from maybe during the first golf game scene. But even that was more physical.

I also hated the way it was handled about the outing, his ex should’ve been arrested for exposing those kind of photos without consent but he just gets away with it and Gabe moves on as an out player which is great but the way it came about without repercussions was disgusting.

I was a bit apprehensive going into this one - the story appeared to be a fairly standard hockey/coming out story and these authors are new-to-me - but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The authors obviously know their stuff when it comes to ice hockey, but their enthusiasm for the sport leads to overkill when it comes to the on-ice details, which had me glazing over at various points and metaphorically checking my watch while I waited for the story to resume.

There's an opposites attract vibe here between very focused and emotionally closed off Gabe - who is deeply closeted and holds himself back from his teammates and friends because he's worried about slipping up - and outgoing, charming and funny Dante (Baller), whose bi-awakening (thanks to Gabe) comes as a surprise, but doesn't really faze him. Their romance is nicely done - they both make mistakes and have to get their heads out of their arses (I admit to cheering for Dante when he gave Gabe what for near the end) to make things work, and I enjoyed the camaraderie between the various team members.

Nick J. Russo delivers an excellent performance, although I really wish someone would give him a bit of coaching when it comes to French pronunciation and accents!

I'll definitely be picking up the next in the series.

4.5 stars for the narration, 4 for the story

I love a good same sex audio book and loved the way that the game of hockey was seamlessly weaving through the storytelling! Definitely a must listen!

Love this hockey same sex romance

This is one of my favourite books so I was delighted to see it in audio format. Therefore it was really disappointing to realise it has been abridged and elements changed / cut out …. The chopped out sex scene between Gabe and Nick made me rewind 3 times before I realised I hadn’t accidentally skipped a chapter and gone mad. It unfortunately makes the story far less enjoyable and loses its depth. I would not have wasted a credit had it been correctly marked as an abridged version :(
