About this listen

What happens when a girl grows up in a church where women can’t speak, music is forbidden, and shame is gospel truth?

In this gripping coming-of-age novel, Wife Material explores the traumatic grip of religious fundamentalism in the modern Church of Christ—a conservative American denomination that silences women and bans instrumental music, all while enforcing rigid codes of purity.

Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of professional violinists, is raised in a paradox. Her father may be gay. Her mother lives under the weight of silent suffering. Their church preaches obedience over truth, and Elizabeth is caught between her longing for freedom and the suffocating roles expected of her.

At Waltham University—the denomination’s flagship college where conformity reigns and suicides haunt the dormitories—Elizabeth finds herself fast-tracked to marriage and deeper repression. But liberation comes through a series of so-called sins: questions, kisses, broken rules, and the brave act of walking away.

Originally published in 2015, this revised edition includes a new foreword by author Deborah Cox reflecting on the evolving sociopolitical climate and her own spiritual transformation. Wife Material is a darkly funny, emotionally raw, and ultimately hopeful story for anyone who’s ever felt trapped by religion—and dared to escape.

This audiobook is a powerful and emotional listen that feels incredibly real. The author shares personal memories from childhood through early adulthood with such honesty that it’s easy to step into her world. The storytelling is vivid, detailed, and layered with humor, heartbreak, and self-reflection. What struck me most was how it explored family dynamics, faith, and the pressure of growing up in a strict environment that expected silence and obedience, especially from women. Elizabeth’s path from shame and impossible expectations to questioning, rebelling, and ultimately reclaiming her freedom is both raw and inspiring. The tension between personal truth and cultural expectations is gripping, and the emotional honesty lingers long after the final chapter.

Entertaining Book about breaking societal rules. I have 3 older brothers and I strongly believe that they thought it was perfect that I was a girl so I could cook, clean and do all the things they didn't want to do. I quickly educated thhem that wasn't the case. I will share this with my 2 daughters even though they don't need it but they will find it entertaining too.

This audiobook tells the amazing story of a girl who grows up in a world where her voice is forbidden, music is banned, and shame masquerades as sacred truth. The author superbly captures a coming-of-age journey through the suffocating grip of religious fundamentalism that still exists in a sect of Christianity. It's a searing examination of contemporary spiritual abuse that still silences women.

This audiobook is a sharp and emotionally honest story about identity, expectation, and the search for freedom. The raw, witty writing captures both humor and vulnerability in equal measure. The characters feel real—flawed but relatable—and their choices invite reflection on what it means to live authentically rather than by others’ rules. The narration adds depth, bringing out the dry humor and tension woven through the story. Some moments feel intentionally uncomfortable, but that honesty is what gives the book its power. A daring, thoughtful, and liberating listen that lingers after it ends.

I was utterly captivated by this audiobook! It explores the intricate emotions of growing up in a world where silence is the norm and freedom feels out of reach. The raw honesty in the storytelling made me feel the weight of shame and the deep desire for liberation. Each narrative is beautifully crafted, prompting me to reflect on my own journey. If you’re in search of a moving story that truly inspires, this audiobook is an absolute gem!
