Summary

When a Hollywood director’s wife dies during a local movie shoot, filming is suspended. The death also spells the end of ex-Mountie Lacey McCrae’s latest temporary job. At loose ends, Lacey volunteers to help in the search for an aging oil baron and his son who have disappeared in the foothills of the Rockies.

As drone operators scan the forested valleys from the air and rock-climbers rappel down narrow chasms in search of the pair, Lacey dons her Victim Services’ cap to ease tensions among the missing oilman’s four adult sons and three ex-wives.

As squabbles over the possible inheritance intensify, Lacey uncovers a surprising link between the missing oilman and the big-shot director. But an unexpected event sends Lacey out on a risky trek across an unstable mountainside on the trail of a murderer who is bent on killing again.

Loved this series

I have thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy of books by J E Barnard. I love the strong female characters, the humanity of the characters, the modern mystery stories, and the setting in Alberta. I also love that the character Jan becomes more prominent in this final book. Often disabled characters are portrayed in a pitying way in books, but I found that Jan's character was a more accurate portrayal and I liked that she was portrayed as just another character with her disability being part of the richness of her character, but her disability was not a central focus of the whole book, which I liked because it normalises disability. I have the same condition as Jan and I found how the author describes it to be the most accurate description I've read in a fictional work - I like that the book can indirectly raise awareness of this condition - even the bit about starting a new med that is being researched at Harvard was accurate (there is actually a research group at Harvard, and I have just started this same medication). Really fun, enjoyable and well written stories, and likeable characters. I look forward to the author's next book (hoping they are writing more!).
