About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The mysterious stranger seems perfect. But nobody knows who she is and what she has been compelled to do to survive. The gripping new bestseller from Tony Parsons.

A bonfire burns on a Cornish beach in the middle of the night.

Nearby, a young woman waits for morning, and for the estate agent to arrive with the keys to her new life in the peaceful fishing village.

She carries with her no trace of the past she has left behind.

Quickly she becomes an object of fascination among the locals; one in particular finds that he just can't stay away.

But can anyone really have start afresh?
What happened to this woman's old life?
And what price did she pay to escape it?

Just a lovely, well read book, takes you there, really enjoyed it, didn’t want it to end.

Excellent

Firstly, I have just finished this book.
I’m not going to say anything about the ending except; aargh, noooo.

We are thrown straight into the story and that doesn’t feel weird. You learn about the characters through the plot, each individual is very well drawn, we learn enough about them to form a good picture.
It’s a clever device that keeps the reader sharp and interested.
The plot twists consistently right to the end.

I thought this was a brilliant book, sharp without cutting, a gentle listen that simultaneously keeps you on your toes.

That ending though? Maybe I had allowed myself to be lulled into a false sense of security, so without giving anything away? Nooooo.

Great characters, story excellent.

Wonderful story. Fantastic characters and a really varied and ingenious style of telling the narrative. The ending was a little flat but at lease you are given a way to reconcile the protagonist.
Very good narration.
Recommended.

Fascinating tale

A big fan of Tony Parsons, and particularly the Detective Wolfe series I was excited to hear this ‘stand-alone’ story. However, I was ultimately disappointed as this book seemed to be a number of ‘stories’ strung together which never seemed to genuinely tie together cohesively. For example, Clementine’s relationship with Tom was so contradictory - one minute she’s heading to London with the ‘man’ she claims to love, the next she’s back and her reunion with Tom suggests that he is the love of her life.. Tom’s obsession is clear but at times borders on boring and exaggerated. Whilst the narrators did their best to bring the characters ‘alive’ there seemed be little substance to any of them. The ending was disappointing and almost predictable.

A few twists and turns but ultimately unsatisfying
