About this listen

Who would sever a tongue from a living mouth? Or kill a pathetic, homeless old man? Or frighten a young doctor into silence? The questions are piling up, and Doug McHarg can't stop asking them - especially when he's warned off by both his boss in the local police and by Scotland Yard. The pattern that emerges is of a powerful organisation with links to the throne and the White House. And all that stands against them is McHarg: a discontented copper with nothing to lose.© Reginald Hill; (P)Oakhill Publishing Ltd Espionage Mystery Police Procedurals Spies & Politics Suspense Thriller & Suspense

I like Reginald Hill and was looking forward to another book like ,The Woodcutter. Not quite in same league

Bit far fetched

This book will especially appeal to conspiracy theorists imo, dealing as it does with the murky - and murderous - worlds of certain secret societies and sleazy politicians.

Hard to write a review that doesn't contain a spoiler in one form or another; e.g. my only quibble with this book, and why I've only given it four stars, is because the ending is just a little bit too tidy, and real life isn't like that, is it?

Highly recommended, nonetheless. A really riveting listen!

Another super Hill book

Not as good as many of his other titles but engaging enough and I read to the end.

Average

I love Reginald Hill mostly, but having listened to a number there is a slightly unpleasant unsophisticated attitude to (and depiction of) women in his books, which is much more marked in these earlier ones. I could imagine Hill - who normally is so subtle - behind the words struggling away with the writing of this one. I did not enjoy it, and couldnt sympathise or relate to the surprisingly two dimensional characters.

This may be one Hill was cutting his teeth with, or writing as fodder for publisher and James Bond loving public.

Hill in James Bond mode. Not his best

Another good easy story from RH. Great characters and realistic storyline that builds well. Good ending.

Good easy listening
