About this listen

'When was the last time you stopped and noticed a wild plant?'

An intriguing and timely exploration of the importance of Britain and Ireland's plant life.

Leif Bersweden has always been fascinated by wild plants. From a young age, his afternoons were spent hunting for and cataloguing the plants in his local area. But it is a landscape that is fast disappearing.

Climate change, habitat destruction and declining pollinator populations mean that the future for plant life looks bleaker than ever before. Many of us are also unable to identify, or even notice, the plants that grow around us.

Now a botanist, Leif decides to go on a mission, to explore the plants that Britain and Ireland have to offer and to meet those who spend time searching for them. Over the course of a year, Leif goes on a journey around the UK and Ireland, highlighting the unique plants that grow there, their history and the threats that face them. His journey takes him from the Cornish coast to the pine forests of Scotland—even to the streets of London, proving that nature can be found in the most unexpected places. Along the way, Leif highlights the joy and positivity that can be found through understanding nature and why it is so desperately important to protect our wildflowers.

The enthusiasm and knowledge of Leif is amazing. I was a little worried having this as an audiobook, as I thought I would need to see the pictures of the flowers to enjoy it, but that was not the case. highly recommended!

Fantastic listen!

Loved this book! As a herbalist and forager it was so lovely to traverse lands I know and love from a botanists point of view. I learnt so much and am eager to add some more botanising to my day to day life! The audio by the author was really great, his passion really shines through!

must read for plant lovers!

The narration is brilliant, Leif has one of those voices that relaxes you and is so easy to listen to. I’ve been struggling with mental health and so decided to go on walks around the countryside of Northern Ireland, which is unfortunately quite barren and farmed where I live. This book makes me feel like I’m walking through a lush landscape with how well he describes the scenery of his travels, and I’ve managed to find gorse, daisies, bluebells and snowdrops!

I’ve also noticed a wide range of “weeds” that I never took notice of before, and he had me smiling the whole way through by describing his encounters and funny stories while being a botanist in the wild.

Makes you feel like you’re walking through nature yourself

Thoroughly enjoyable. My mum was a celebrated flower arranger but it’s been a long time for me to become interested in plants. This has been a wonderful introduction and I’m looking forward to spending more time outdoors learning about them.

Brilliant
