I've had to move out of the city and into the house I inherited here, in the idyllic fishing village of Porthcove, but only for as long as it takes to sell it. You see, I need the money, so I've started seeing some of the locals, you know, as patients, but I tell you, there's something really disturbing about charming neighbors sharing chilling secrets. And it isn't just that. It's the other things. Strange, inexplicable things. It started with odd smells, creepy sounds, and then the intruders...oh God, the intruders.

From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work? Available only on audio, because as Larson says, ghost stories are best told aloud.

Summary
For some, ghosts are no more than the wounds loved ones leave in their wake, haunting the living only with their absence. Others take a more literal view....
Kate Bennett, presenter of paranormal investigation cable TV show, Where the Dead Walk, isn't sure what she believes, other than she seems cursed to lose all those closest to her.
After investigating a neglected cliff-top house, empty for a decade because it's "haunted", Kate is convinced a spirit within holds the answers to a childhood she can't remember and an unimaginable crime.
What she can't know is that the house's owner, Sebastian Dahl, is searching for something too, and he intends to get it, whatever the cost.

Difficult
To be honest I cannot say whether or not the book is good, as I only listened to the first 15 minutes.
I found it very difficult to engage in the story due to the narration. I’m sure Helen Clapp is a lovely person, but her narration lacked any sort of emotion. It felt like the story was being told by Siri.
Probably best to go buy the book and read it yourself.

yet another good book ruined by poor narration
I listen to books all the time in my studio.... every day. Recently I've had to return three books as the reader is just terrible. Whats going on with these new books? Don't audible listen to the reader?
I wanted to listen to this book as it sounds like a good, interesting, but not too taxing story to hear whilst I work. However, I've had to give up as the reader is terrible. She reads too fast. The characters all sound so much the same I'm struggling to understand which character is speaking much of the time. And the reading style? Well, if you like to have a book read to you in the style of the voice over artist for Masterchef reading out a menu, then you'll love it

I didnt get this story finished unfortunately as the speed of the narration was ridiculously fast. It actually gave me a headache and spoilt the suspense building. I'll have to try and finish it in print form. Won't buy anything with this narrator again.

Things that go bump in the night.
I have just finished listening to this and my first thought was 'wow, that narrator did an amazing job!' I have no idea how she read at that speed without slipping up, especially in the last few action-packed chapters. I shall certainly look out for other books read by Helen Clapp.
I enjoyed this book, although it rather stretched my imagination towards the end. That was a shame really, as it looked like it was heading for the full five stars earlier on.
The narrative is based around a TV show about haunted houses - 'Where the Dead Walk'. The main characters are two of the show's presenters, Kate Bennett and Harry White. Kate has been through a tough time, as we learn through her backstory, and Harry is becoming more fond of her as the show progresses, so there's a bit of a romance element too. When Sebastian Dahl offers to allow them to film in his pseudo-Victorian house, things start to unravel.
There's some excellent haunted atmosphere, especially earlier on. The members of the TV crew gel well together and seemed totally fearless as they stalked through spooky houses in the dark. I could never have done that. I enjoyed trying to piece together Sebastian Dahl's motivations, though, of course, I didn't manage.
Dark, brooding and atmospheric, but not so scary that I couldn't sleep at night.

Love this series!
I’ve read and loved this book quite a while ago but have just gone for a second encounter via the audio version.
I enjoyed Helen Clapp’s narration but had pictured the narrator as male when I read it the first time round - no worries, it worked both ways!
It’s just such good fun, especially when you know the tv show this is loosely based on - great characters, skilful writing, plenty of underlying humour, a cosy murder mystery feel and a dash of supernatural - perfect mix.
I have a particular soft spot for a couple of the side characters (Eamonn the Medium is a fabulous creation to name but one) and am doubly pleased that they reappear in the second instalment.

Where The Dead Walk
I really enjoyed this supernatural mystery! Definitely not what I was expecting, but I was quickly drawn into Kate's story.
I really don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling it for anyone, but it has an excellent plot with a lovely slow build that makes you want to keep going. Lots of believable characters, plot twists and thrills along the way. This is smarter than your average ghost story!

Didn't finish - Trigger Warning
I have gotten to the point in my life where I am tired of authors, particularly male authors, using rape and or/ S&M as plot devices or to make the story enticing. This afternoon I hit the part where one of the women is beaten from participating in S&M. I will be returning it posthaste. There is no need to add sadism into a ghost story - a good author doesn't need it to add interest.

I loved the story, I was completely engrossed in it, but at times the narrator made it difficult. If it weren't for the story itself I would not have finished it. Her continuous speaking and run on sentences made it at times, hard to follow.

A TV Paranormal team faces unexpected struggles
I really liked this book. it kept my interest and is very good. It follows the story of a paranormal investigation team who has a TV show and struggles with not having anything happen while investigating, having to stage things to have something to show on their program. As the team struggles with this, they are offered a case to investigate that takes them far beyond anything they could have ever expected and puts one member of the team in grave danger. A lot of unexpected twists lead to a climatic conclusion.

Interesting plot. Slow to get interesting
The story got better but it seemed to take half the book to do so. It probably wasn't really that long because the chapters were so short it just seemed so. The narrator did good job at the various British dialects, but she spoke quickly giving the perception she was racing through the story. There was a lot to for her to say though and I found myself thinking ' just get to the pont!'. I just read a sample of the next book Crow's Cottage and I will get the Audible book.

Good paranormal mystery
Where the Dead Walk
(Where the Dead Walk #1)
by John Bowen
This was not so much a ghost book but more of a different kind of paranormal story. A curse, a sorceress, a spell was involved plus visions and seances, ouija boards, and mediums. Good story but not really scary. Some suspense but more a great mystery and how the clues are tracked down and figured out!
Narration was fair. With the stuttering character, it was horrible!
