Summary

It has been ten years since 21-year-old Kevin MacKenzie, Jr. ("Mac"), has been missing. A Columbia University senior, about to graduate and already enrolled in Duke University Law School, he walked out of his room in Manhattan's Upper West Side without a word to his college roommate and has never been seen again. However, he does make three ritual phone calls to his mother every year: on her birthday, on his birthday, and on Mother's Day. Each time, he assures her he is fine, refuses to answer her frantic questions, then hangs up. Even the death of his father, a corporate lawyer, on 9/11 does not bring him home, or break the pattern of his calls.

Mac's sister Carolyn is now 26, a law school graduate, and has just been hired as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. She has endured two family tragedies -- her brother's inexplicable disappearance, and the loss of her father. Realizing that neither she nor her mother will ever be able to have closure and get on with their lives until they find her brother, she sets out to discover what happened to Mac, and why he has found it necessary to hide from them.

Her journey into the world of people who willingly disappear from their own lives leads her to learn about others who may or may not still be alive, and ultimately to a deadly confrontation with someone close to her who suddenly becomes an enemy -- and cannot allow her to disclose his secret...

Where are you now?

I have read or listened to every book she has ever written, even co-written. This was my all time favorite! Could not stop listening, she is brilliant.

Outstanding suspense mystery!

Where Are You Now? was released in 2008 soon after Mary Higgins Clark's 80th birthday. This wonderful suspense thriller is as good of any of her earlier novels. The publisher's summary gives a good synopsis of the story, so I will nor repeat it here. Narration is excellent.

Not as good as expected

First, I loved the book by Alafair Burke and saw that she had a lot of books co-written with Ms Clark. So, I thought this one would be just as great as The Wife or similar but, I was disappointed. The story seemed far fetched. The writing was to me somewhat immature. Definitely, not as good as Ms Burke.

Predictable

The good narration and likable heroin make an otherwise utterly predictable mystery tolerable. You know there’s a problem when you can guess the killer the moment the character first appears in the story. There were a few enjoyable surprises along the way, but with so many points of view and so many characters, it was hard to keep track of everyone. No matter, in the end the killer was exactly who I thought it was. Oh well, this made for a pleasant enough diversion once I just decided to go with it. But if you’ve read this author before and are familiar with her “formula“, then you’ll likely guess the killer as well.

Why can't I ever guess the end?

I really enjoyed her book like I do all her novels. There is some heart ache in it but also a happy future. Great character development with out laboring over details. Still the Queen of modern day suspense
