About this listen

When attractive, impulsive English widow Lilia takes a holiday in Italy, she causes a scandal by marrying Gino, a dashing and highly unsuitable Italian 12 years her junior. Her prim, snobbish in-laws make no attempt to hide their disapproval, and when Lilia's decision eventually brings disaster, her English relatives embark on an expedition to face the uncouth foreigner. But when they are confronted by the beauty of Italy and the charm and vitality of the disreputable Gino, they are forced to examine their own narrow lives. Their reactions are emotional, violent, and unexpected.

I found the story a bit uneven but Petherbridge has the perfect tone for EM Forster, which made it a pleasure to listen to.

Wonderfully narrated

I can't bear the way the man who sounds like an ugly ivy league bullfrog who "hopes you have enjoyed this programme" bellows at the listener the second the story ends! I am hoping to reflect on the carefully crafted last paragraphs of novels and instead this voice pitches in, in case, God forbid, we have forgotten which service we are using. We are already signed up! You don't need to keep selling the product.

WHY can't the horrid voice of Audible WAIT?

this was so well read and such a sad and modern story I couldn't stop listening. with great sneaky jokes and a cast of complicated and interesting characters, twists and surprises I couln't understand why it hadn't been made into a film - but apparently it has. now I need to decide whether to watch it or keep it in my imagination.

unexpected pleasure

A touching story is almost ruined by a theatrical Italian accent of the narrator. What’s the point of putting it on when Italian characters speak Italian?!

Different narrator please

I love his beautifully observed satire and the affection he has for his characters. This book is perfectly performed and I preferred it to the version read by Stephen Fry. Stephen Fry is brilliant but lacks depth of understanding when portraying women. The story is of an English family undone by their own prejudices and arrogances.

EM Forster genius
